Warriors SF Mike Dunleavy, son of Mike Dunleavy, signed a 5-year, $44M deal yesterday, just beating the deadline for his class to get their extentions done. (That “M” stands for “Million”, by the way. The “44″ stands for “forty-four”. The “$” means “dollars”.) Mike Dunleavy is excited, as is anyone who pulls off a good scam.
“I think I’m coming along well,” Dunleavy said. “I got off to a rocky start early on. There were a lot of expectations, and they already had a bunch of players at my position. Through that, I’ve persevered, and I’m well on my way. I’m pleased with where I’m at and where I’m headed.”
“The way Mike performed, the way he conducted himself and the way we run our organization, we both felt it was something that we wanted,” [Head of Basketball Operations Chris] Mullin said.
The key words there are “the way we run our organization”. Read into that whatever you please, as long as it’s the same thing we think, which is “bad contract”. Still, it’s only one deal – It’s not like the Warriors just haphazardly overpay people or even sign the occasional bench player to starter’s money.
No word on what Dunleavy’s first big purchase is, but whatever it is will probably become the basis for Saw III.
