Danny Ferry is the alpha and the omega

USA Today’s David Dupree has a nice article about Cleveland GM Danny Ferry and his family’s legacy in basketball. Y’know, it’s weird enough that the Cavs seemingly have one of the brightest futures in the NBA, but even weirder is that Danny Ferry is in charge of it all.
As some of you may remember, in 1989 the Cavaliers broke up what Magic Johnson called the “team of the 90s” by trading Ron Harper for Ferry’s draft rights. Keep in mind, this was only for his rights - he didn’t even show up for another year, plus the Clippers received 2 first round picks in the deal. The Cavs eventually signed Ferry to a (at the time) huge 10-year contract, and he was never more than an average player. To make it all worse, he was like the nicest guy on Earth, so it was difficult to hate him to the degree we wanted to. Between that, Brad Daugherty’s back, and Mark Price’s groin, we wore a sad face a lot in the early 90s, thinking about what could have been.
Mr. Dupree’s article tracks Danny’s whole career, and pretty much paints him as the best person ever.
So far the family is not being shortchanged, [Ferry's] wife says.
“He just has an amazing fatherly commitment. As a husband, also, but to see the things that he does to spend 20 minutes with his girls,” she says.
“When we were in San Antonio, he’d drive a half-hour to spend 15 minutes at lunch with them and then drive a half-hour back.
“The other day he scheduled a flight at 5:30 in the morning so he’d be here at 8 o’clock for a concert at school. He figures it out and makes it work. I don’t think there is any question in those girls’ minds that they are most important to him.”
Frankly, we were sold until this. There is nothing more important than the Cavs winning, and certainly LeBron James comes before your children, sir. Straighten out, jerk. No…no…that’s not right. He’s fine - a great guy. There’s a lengthy segment about how dedicated and straightforward he is with everyone, including free agents, Head Coach Mike Brown, and owner Dan Gilbert. YOU BETTER NOT SCREW UP, YOU ASS.
Can one man be both the best and worst things to happen to a franchise? Is this fair to us? Why can’t the NBA just make our lives easy and declare us champs tomorrow, so we can get some rest?

Interesting post. I am an avid online gambler and fantasy sports player and place most of my bets online. I find the internet to be a great tool and even use resources like StatShark to help me make my picks. What a great sports forecastings tool.
I saw Danny Ferry and his family at Austin City Limits Festival in 2004. His wife is absurdly hot and they have three of the most ridiculously cute kids you’ve ever seen - like kids out of a cereal commercial.
Can you believe this rf clown, posting an ad as a comment?! Get on up outta here, ya tool.
As for Ferry… I was impressed over the summer. He was an awful, awful player, but it looked like he had learned from the mistakes GM’s often made in acquiring him, and had a good offesason. Hughes, Marshall, Damon Jones… it was like a whole free-agent haul totally comprised of underappreciated players. Now they’re 10-6, but I’m not feeling the newbies. ‘Bron, Gooden (ironically, a guy Ferry looked to deal last summer), and Z are having great years, but Hughes, Jones, and Marshall have been disappointments. And he still hasn’t figured out that any D-League reject could replace Eric Snow at this point with little drop-off. So, the jury’s still out on Ferry… though the Hughes/Marshall malaise has to wear off soon, right? Right?
