Darko has a broken motivational drive and a sprained skill set

Princess Zara say “Booga Booga!”It’s year three, Larry Brown is making people miserable elsewhere, and Darko still is doing nothing that inspires anything other than statements of “Jesus what the hell was that about? Crap. You’re crap! You mom hates you!” It’s not always that bad, but even Pistons coach Flip Saunders isn’t buying into this thing anymore.

“I know when I was 20 it didn’t take me long to warm up. The bottom line is, being a professional athlete your job is to play when you go on the floor. Whether you have to jog or stretch or whatever, you have to be prepared to play when you step on that floor. That’s not just for him but for everybody.”

“He’s only 20 years old but sooner or later age isn’t going to be an excuse,” Saunders said.

That was in response to Milicic’s claim he was “cold” when he entered the game in junk time over the weekend. Not cold like “I haven’t played in awhile,” but cold like, “brrr”.

We just noticed how many quotation marks and fake quotes we used in this post. That’s a crutch and we’re going to try to beat it. Apologies all around. As for Darko, you know what they say – “fool me once, shame on me, try twice, don’t count your chickens.”

Poor Darko… Remember all the nice things that people were saying about him in 2003:

“He has good ball-handling skills…” – Dude has a Turnover Ratio of 27.0!! Yikes!

“He can kill you from the perimeter…” – With a career True Shooting % of 35.5 and 0-for-2 on 3-pointers in his career? Umm… no.

“Good passer who is blessed with solid court vision…” – An Assist Ratio of 9.0 this season, 6.8 for his career… we’re moving into Steven Hunter territory here, folks. And that’s a bad thing.

“Creative scorer who understands how to set-up his defender off the dribble…” – Um, Darko’s getting outscored on a per-minute basis by Rafael Araujo and Bruce Bowen. Yeah.

Oh, and never getting to the line, combined with shooting 37.5% from the stripe, certainly the results of being “cold”… The guy’s posting a PER (6.1) that makes Michael Olowokandi and Kevin Ollie look effective. What the hell were the scouts thinking?

I wonder if Darko is the biggest bust in NBA history. Obviously Sam Bowie, Chris Washburn, Dennis Hopson, and Harold “Baby Jordan” Miner come to mind, but those guys were overhyped players who turned out to be simply average; Milicic has just been flat-out awful so far. He’s making Mark Madsen’s new contract look like a good investment! All in all, the mis-scouting of Darko stands up as perhaps the greatest intelligence failure of this century, including the faulty info that got us into Iraq.
