Defamer points out that HBO is close to doing an NBA show, coproduced by the NBA, George Clooney’s company Section 8, and the Maloofs.

HBO is closing in on a deal to develop the project, which would tell the story of a fictional NBA expansion team through the eyes of a coach, a cheerleader, a seasoned player and a rookie. Episodes would follow the group as they struggle with their place in the league.

Like past Section Eight-HBO collaborations “Unscripted” and “K Street,” series would combine fictional and real-life elements. Producers will have unprecedented access to the NBA during production.

Former Lakers center Vlade Divac is said to be in talks to play the veteran, while former Dallas Mavericks coach Don Nelson is said to be up for the coach.

If this is as good as Unscripted and K Street, we’re in for a real (non)treat, since both lasted all of one season. Whatever the case, our mom loves George Clooney and the NBA, so if she’s happy we are, too. Divac is already quite the experienced thespian, which brings the project some additional credibility. We could swear he was on Saved By the Bell once, but according to this hilarious profile of Zack Morris, that’s not the case.
