A writer from Sports Illustrated is starting an ABA team and he’s calling it the Vermont Frost Heaves. They also play in the Roger Brown Division.

frost heave - NOUN: New England A section of ruptured pavement caused by the expansion of freezing water immediately under the road. Also called Regional frost boil.

Roger Brown - NOUN: Nickname: “The Rajah”
Ht. 6-5 Wt. 205 College - Dayton ABA Teams: Indiana (1967-68 to 1974-75), Memphis (1974-75), Utah (1974-75)

1st Player signed by Indiana Pacers. New York City playground legend; 3-Time ABA All-Pro Selection; 4-Time ABA All-Star Team Member; ABA All-Time Record Holder of 21 Field Goals in a row; 2nd Player to score 10,000 career points in the ABA; 1970 ABA Playoffs MVP; Pacers’ All-Time ABA Point Leader with 12,118; Pacers’ All-Time ABA Minutes Played Leader with 24,364; Played on all three Indiana Pacers ABA Championship Teams; 1st Career ABA Player to be nominated to the Basketball Hall of Fame (in 1996); Unanimous selection to ABA 30 Man All-Time Team. Passed away in 1996 due to liver cancer.

Okay, Roger Brown isn’t so bad - at least they’re not talking about that guy who makes stuff up for the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Our interpretation of a frost heave, though? Where we grew up they call those ‘pot holes’. It’s only ten grand to start a team; we’re in. Look for the Los Angeles Cracked Sewer Pipes of Anaheim sometime early next year

The Frost Heaves are playing in a gym with a capacity of 1600. SI isn’t funding this, but they’re designing the logo and will give Wolff space to write about his adventures as a team owner, which we’re guessing could be an exciting one part series.

Holy Shit, a Roger Brown reference! I hadn’t even finished reading this post before I began to wonder…

Being a Vermonter, the name is PERFECT!! We have to deal with these annoyances all year, so why not poke some fun at them?

  3. 3 Dee

Also a Vermonter! The name is very appropriate! I like to refer to frost heaves as speed bumps, and we all know they SLOW us down. I rest my case.
