Larry Brown is pumped

Nate Robinson’s dunk contest win is exactly the type of thing Larry likes to help mold his players into form.

The dunk contest actually wasn’t bad, although we hope this doesn’t become a trend of rolling out past champs every year. Somehow the thought of Delonte West pulling Dee Brown out of the crowd isn’t all that exciting.

If you look at all the pics of the Webb dunk, it’s pretty amazing, especially considering where that little guy took off from. Should become an iconic image of All-Star Saturday Night, which counts for something.

As for the rest – we doubt we’re alone in saying “oh my god get rid of that fucking Shooting Stars thing. Jesus, it’s horrible. Oh my god, please don’t make people watch that anymore.”

The 3-point Shootout is a decent competition, but there seems to be a lack of enthusiasm around it anymore. There’s no prestige.

The Skills Comp…eh. Somehow we’re just not anticipating that annual showdown between Dwyane and LeBron in this. If only there was something better out there.

(Note: There’s something wrong when dude gets 14 tries to complete a dunk. No, we have no solution to that.)

Nate was impressive. But the NBA needs to stop playing around and get a dunk contest with Kobe, TMAC, LeBron, and Vince Carter and DWade. That’s what everyone wants to see.

Personally I think it was even more impressive how Nate tried so many times to get his dunks, but never gave up. I mean, yea, I could probably dunk 15 times in a row in front of 20,000 fatasses from Houston, but I’m not a dwarf.

Yeah, you have to admire the determination, but it kind of killed the drama.

Half the audience was standing on the court with him by the end, plus the judges sat there and had time to discuss what score they should give him.

1) Dirk shouldn’t have even made the 2nd round because his last 2-ball of the first round was after the buzzer.

2) Robinson got three 10’s on his final dunk, despite missing 13 times and having to actually move in several feet after about 10 tries. I’ve never heard fans boo at the end of a dunk contest before, so that was a first.

3) How are the fans supposed to get excited for the “Skills” competition when the players don’t even look like they are enjoying it? When one of the four guys can’t even hit one of the jump shots and runs out of balls, something is wrong.

Something needs to be done to get the excitement back into All-Star Weekend.

Misses don’t count against the score. When he hit it, it was a pretty good dunk. Josh Smith got screwed on the “Tape Dunk.” That was a lot better than he was given credit for.

Yeah “the dunk” is more than just the machanics of taking the ball and putting it through the hoop. It’s everything that goes around it, too.

All those misses matter – it kills the “Holy shit!! did he just do that!?!?” factor.

Instead it becomes “Holy crap…he tried that. Now hopefully he can get it next time because that will really be something.”

Yeah you guys are correct about all of the misses. But something is missing here. The real NBA stars used to participate in the Slam Dunk and 3 Point competition. It’s not that way anymore, and that is why a lot of the sizzle fizzed away. $1Million pot…Kobe, TMAC, VC, DWade, LeBron. The ratings would be through the roof.

But did anyone else say “oh bullshit, there’s no way he can jump over spud webb, who does this guy think he is….” and then leap out of their chair when he did?

I’m really dumb sometimes.

I just now realied all this space stuff is because it’s the Houston Rockets.

It was Clyde! Looked at the video, noticed that Nate Robinson gave it away. My blog has the video, too.

And Jones: the Million Dollar Dunk Contest with all the “stars” – that idea belongs to Lang Whitaker from SLAM Mag. years ago. At least give credit when you use his ideas, dude.

11 JONESONTHENBA February 20, 2006 at 3:53 pm

Didn’t say I came up with the idea…just saying that is what they should do…jeez!

12 The Cavalier February 20, 2006 at 10:02 pm

Hey guys no fighting here unless LeBron’s tights vs Paul Pierce’s odd shin guards.

13 JONESONTHENBA February 20, 2006 at 10:20 pm

KOBE HAD THE TIGHTS FIRST!!! Get it straight!

14 The Cavalier February 20, 2006 at 11:25 pm

I’m breaking the tights out of retirement tomorrow – there’s something I just can’t pass up.
