Last summer when all that crap with the Hawks and Joe Johnson ended up going to court, Steve Belkin was forced to sell his shares of the team to the rest of the ownership group.
ESPN’s John Hollinger strays from the calculator to reveal that the transaction hasn’t actually taken place yet, and not The Belk thinks the whole team should be his.
Having dragged out the buyout process for long enough, Belkin’s lawyers switched gears and made a court filing arguing that, because the buyout hadn’t been completed in the agreed-upon 60-day timetable, he should now be allowed to buy out the other owners at cost. In other words, if he wins this round of what is shaping up to be a long, drawn-out battle, he would become the sole owner of both the Hawks and Thrashers.
We could see the advantages to being the sole owner of the Atlanta Hawks – what other franchise allows you to hold the title of “owner of the worst franchise in the league”?
The Thrashers, though? Who would want to own the Thrashers? We called Steve Belkin to ask him, and he gave us a curt yet telling, “Because.”
How’d we get Belkin’s phone number, you ask? Simple – we guessed. And we got it on our third try. The first try was Vin Diesel, and the second we ended up talking to the Arizona DMV. So, not only have we talked to two very wealthy people this morning, but we’re also fully educated on the new parallel parking laws in Phoenix.
