Dirk Nowitzki is not the MVP
Published by The Cavalier April 11th, 2006 in LeBron James, Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban, Kobe Bryant, MVPs, Paul Pierce, Dwyane Wade
At least if you ask ESPN, he’s not.
They’re running a poll on the front page right at this moment asking who the NBA MVP is. Your choices? Kobe, LeBron, Wade, Nash, Billups. They don’t even offer Dirk as an option, which is a little bizarre, and something Mark Cuban will surely have rectified by noon or so. (If you really require a link to ESPN.com, there you go.)
LeBron is currently in the lead with 38% of about 63K votes, and they’ve even broken it down by state, which is sort of interesting if you like that type of thing. We do wonder how ESPN knows where we are, though.
We’ve been taking some heat for pushing LeBron so much, but we Cavaliers fans, what do you want? If you’re actually reading our words, you’ll note we’ve said over and over that there are always several completely viable candidates. If any of the following won, there couldn’t be much of an argument. Personally, we like Ric Bucher’s breakdown of the types of MVPs people pull for:
MEP (Most Excellent Player) –Kobe Bryant.
MVPOAWT (Most Valuable Player on a Winning Team) — Dwyane Wade.
MSIPOATTWBTE (Most Statistically Impressive Player on a Team That Was Better Than Expected) — Elton Brand.
MVPOTBT (Most Valuable Player on the Best Team) — Chauncey Billups.
MDPDTSOATTFS (Most Dominant Player Down the Stretch on a Team that Finished Strong) — LeBron James.
MIP (Most Indispensable Player)– Steve Nash.
We agree with all of those - any of them could be a viable MVP winner…kinda. If it weren’t for Kobe’s 81, nobody would be talking about him for it, if you ask us. And we’ll get blasted for this, but Billups can’t get it if he’s not even unanimously the MVP of his own team. If even 10% of the people think Detroit needs Ben Wallace more, you can’t do that.
So where’s Dirk? Sorry, but it looks like you Dallas fans have to live with him being held to different standards. He’s the PWPPFABHAHUHGTTFBHNDADTYIJTSASSBPYHTAITPAHMCWTSSMMAHAW, ie Player Whose Past Playoff Failures Are Being Held Against Him Until He Gets To The Finals; Besides, He’s Not Doing Anything Different This Year, It’s Just That San Antonio Seems So Bored, Plus You Have To Add In That People Are Holding Mark Cuban’s Willingness To Spend So Much Money Against Him, As Well.
That said, he should at least be included in ESPN’s poll, right above Pierce and Randolph.

Plus I like Josh Howard more
Howard’s missed a lot of games
Interestingly, NBA.TV’s top 10 from last night had Dirk’s buzzer beater over LeBron’s suggesting that Drik is in fact the MVP.
just got home from work and YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME?! i hate espn and i hate america… dirk for mvp
tried to post this last night… computer went crazy… so i went to bed.. but anyway… im posting it now…
get that past playoff failures bull outta here.. hes had ONE bad playoffs… last year… and WHEN DID THE PLAYOFFS HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH REGULAR SEASON MVP.. i just got off the phone with a buddy of mine about this very topic… i mean heres a leader of a team that is goin gto win over 60 games and set a franchise mark for wins… a team that was picked by a majority of the “experts” to finish out of the top 4 in the west… this is a team that was supposed to dearly miss nash and finley.. only to get better after they left… this is a team that has had a slew of injuries… over 20 games missed by 2nd best player josh howard… over 20 game smissed by devin harris… over 20 games missed by defensive stopper adrian griffin… over 20 games and now gone for the season by a scorer off the bench in van horn… ALLLLLll dirk has done is not only keep this team playing well.. but kept them 1 freakin game behind the team that the NBA for some crazy reason loves even though all of their players have aids…. dirks defense has improved.. hes hitting clutch shots…. what ELSE does he have to do to get some respect around here… its not like nash has ever done much in the playoffs… and we all know what lebron has done… dirk nowitzki is the MVP of the NBA and its absolutely ridiculous that he is getting dissed by so many people… so i guess if dirk ISNT the MVP then avery johnson damn well better be coach of the year.. and i guess donnie nelson is exec of the year… yah and DIOP is defensivie player of the year… and stack is 6th man of the year.. and josh powell is ROY… cuz since dirk cant get any respect.. someone on a 60+ win team has to…
Who does he play for again?
Mark Cuban for MVP.
