Kobe Bryant is number 24

by The Cavalier on April 26, 2006 · 91 comments

kobe jersey.jpgIf we had a section called News of the Unexpected, this would probably fall right into there.

Kobe Bryant is changing his number to 24 next season.

We already told you once why the man came to arrive at the meaningless #8, but nobody is yet ready to explain why this switch is coming.

In order for a player to change jersey numbers at will, he either has to change teams or have the team inform the league of the decision more than six months in advance. Players who stay with the same team must have worn the same number for four seasons or longer. Sources say the Lakers informed the league of Bryant’s wish to change his number by this year’s March 3 deadline.

Calls placed to Bryant’s agent Rob Pelinka and the Lakers were not immediately returned.

That’s not entirely true – we called the Lakers late last night, but when we got them on the line, we totally forgot what we were calling for and just started making grunting and hissing sounds. The woman on the other line got scared and screamed “Oh my god, there’s scary wild animals calling me!!!” We hung up and felt bad for awhile afterward.

While we don’t understand why Kobe would mess with his iconic status like this, maybe he’s getting a kickback on jersey sales. Or, this could be a huge misunderstanding, and this could just be the number of additional shots Kobe is going to take tonight in Game 2. (God that was cliche – sorry, we’re adjusting to the time change still.)

thats really stupid that kobe would change his # because he sells tons of memorabilia and now its worthless! i love kobe and the lakers and have lots of memorabilia of the team and kobe this sucks!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t think it is worthless. The Kobe number 8 jersey is an automatic throwback jersey and will be worth hundreds. Kobe is the greatest player in recent history. When he changes his number he’ll just be making double.

Kobe is the best player in the game today. He is a person not a number. hes still going to be Kobe Bryant even with number 24. He is dedicating this number to his high school days because he remembers where he came from unlike these other overpayed players.

Kobe is the most dominant player in the NBA, so what if he changes his #. Jordan did it so why cant Kobe do it. He will still be the same dominant player that he has always been

I believe that if he wants to change his number its alright who cares what the reasons are its just a number change its not like if he is leaving the team or something like that he just wants to finish his career with #24 he believes that #8 was his first part of his nba career and now his second part of his career he wants to be #24

7 Kobe Bryant July 4, 2006 at 9:50 am

Kobe Bryant is one of the most prelific scorers ever and he wanted #24 from the beginning but his wish is granted now so why are people questioning him?

8 Dale Dickbut July 10, 2006 at 9:34 pm

kobe is going to do his thing no matter what number he is wearing besides he has money and he licks my pussy in the alley on wedensdays at 3:00 in the back of kroger

9 Bill von Goeben July 25, 2006 at 10:29 pm

After all Kobe will be Kobe. No other player in the current NBA will ever compare to him, so he will continue to do what he does best no matter what # he has on his back, so get off his.

Kobe is still going to be Kobe if he changes his #. I know that he is a amazing player. I just hope that he doesn’t change it. He has a record with that number. Kobe Bryant is my favorite player on the Lakers. But just because he changed his number that doesn’t mean that I am going to stop liking him. I am a True lakers Fan for life. + kobe Bryant is not self fish. They just jalous because he is better then every one else.

That’s because Jordan’s number 23 was retired idiot… he couldnt wear it again… then when he moved to washington, he wore 23 again… this isn’t the same situation, so I don’t know what you’re talking about Brandon.

23 Shervin September 3, 2006 at 3:51 pm

Kobe’s just gonna be three times strong. Deal with that, HATERS!!

24 Kobe Bryant September 5, 2006 at 9:46 pm

39 idrees October 4, 2006 at 4:15 pm

I think kobe changing his number is a good thing becuase now more people will buy his jersyey now he might have the number 1 selling jersey. But i dont i agree 100% that changing his number to 24 was a good idea i think he his trying to be better than jordan by making his number 1 above 23. i think that he should of changed his number to 16 8 + 8 becuase since he his getting better has a player he should add his number to 16 that would have been better. BUT HEY HES THE MAN KOBE BRYANT THE BEST IN THE LEAGUE.

I think it a great idea that kobe wants to be number 24 he lead his high school team to the finlas and won and he can do the same this year so this is why i think its a great idea and for all your guys that hate the idea your the ones being crazy let kobe do what he wants after all he did score 81 point so chaging numbers is not going to change the way he plays ball!

42 b1 October 9, 2006 at 12:41 am

we all know kobe was one of the best player right now but sometimes player must have to moved on, coz kobe is trying to make things new and more better. ps: hope lakers team will get the trophie this year 2007…

You cannot judge a person by its number. In corollary, what is significant is on how he plays the game and not is his jersey is telling about. So common cheer up with Kobe!!!!!!!!Let heaven rejoice and earth be glad…

45 nebur amor October 10, 2006 at 11:55 pm

Kobe is just a spectacular player in the NBA history. Michael Jordan? No way! He’s just second with kobe in terms of skills. Thus, Kobe decides to wear #24 in his jersey so that all will understand that 24 is better than 23. Kobe and Michael respectively…Cheer up for Kobe…Lakers will win the championship

Kobe pick that number in order to be like mike! he wants to be 2nd to MJ!!! right!!!

50 chawes October 12, 2006 at 9:25 pm

he only became popular when he’s doing MJ moves, if MJ is not in NBA, there will be no KOBE BRYANT copying MJ moves, so it will be better to pick no. 24 for kobe, next to 24!!! james already get no. 23, so kobe gets mad, he’s planning already before to get no. 23!!!
