Thanks to the heroes over at The Beautiful Lie (which is finally up and running), here’s the reaction to Renaldo from inside the NYC Draft night crowd. To put it in context, they’re Nets fans.
We must know – how did everyone react when you were cheering the Renaldo pick?

I knew it was going to be a fab Draft Night
Haha, I think the Knicks fans were too dazed by their pick to notice me jumping around and yelling like a crazy man.
PS. Thanks for the link love, you broke our site tho! Haha, stupid cheap hosting.
Damn, I had no idea the power I hold.
Expensive hosting sucks too btw. If any of you people own servers, hook me and The Beautiful Lie up, will you?
man, now we can finally afford to give up the valuable asset that is zoran planinic…
If it’s any consolation Steve Nash got cornrows.
IS he even gona get clock? they got Danny lee, Channing frye, Jerome James (HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA im sorry but he still has a roster spot so he has to be mentioned), james lang, malik rose, mo taylor and Eddy Curry. Where is he going to play (and better yet when because there are only 48 mins per position), and i hope is not small fowrad (richardson, crawford, woods,j. rose and matt barnes). so tell me again why did you pick him. they shoulda chose williams and traded him to New Jersey for a first rounder next year or sold it for cash like the suns cuz god knows they need cap relief.
“Thomas is a maximum contract caliber 6th man….”
let me know where you get your crack from, RA, because that is some potent shit.
Which Thomas? Not Tim?
No sixth man can be a max guy – it’s like by definition or something.
both Thomases are equally deplorable.
Its like he has the potential to be a max contract guy but underachieves to the point that he is a 6th man. Some teams would pay him a max contract. Maybe hotlanta or New York.
Kurt Thomas is probably the best post defender in the league. If not then he is in the top 3.
He should try actually playing though.
Didn’t Tim already say he had enough money and wanted to stay in PHX? Of course this means he goes full MLE with NYC, but he did say it.
Yeah he sorta said that. He said i have enough money and want to stay in Phoenix IF they can pay me enough. I don’t know how the hell they got so much cash out of Brian Grant leaving. Hopefully they sign Brevin Knight too.
Phoenix has to let someone(s) go since they have to give big deals to Diaw and/or Barbosa. Sarver’s a cheap bastard. There’s no way they outbid anyone for Tim Thomas and you have to assume Thomas earned someone’s MLE at least. Maybe they can build a time machine and go back and not give Stoudemire that huge extension. But they have to be sure not to touch anything. Even the slightest change can alter the future in ways they can’t imagine.
There was some 12-year-old sitting in the back corner wearing a Balkman South Carolina jersey. And it wasn’t Renaldo Balkman. And I think he was beaten to death.
And what’s with the Isiah can draft myth. He took Marcus Camby 2nd overall, Damon Stoudamire 7th overall. You could make a cat your GM and he could get two mediocre starters out of those draft slots.
He threw away a pick on Tracy McGrady 8th overall when there was zero chance he was staying in Toronto past his rookie deal.
Trevor Ariza was so good that they gave him away for the rights to Steve Francis’ max contract. You can get someone as good as David Lee off the street. Nate Robinson is a sideshow. Channing Frye is the second coming of Raef LaFrentz.
And Renaldo Balkman immediately becomes the third-best player on the Knicks after Francis and Frye. This is the most I’ve ever written in one sitting.
Becky, when you’re done with RA’s crack, pass it on to me. Kurt Thomas BEST, or even top 3, post defender in the league? Better than the Wallaces, Duncan, Brand? Even Mourning, Howard, Jermaine O’Neal, Dampier and AK-47? I wouldn’t even let him play on my World Cup team.
Thats just because he can’t run.
Those guys are better at post help defense from the weak side but as far as straight up man-to-man post defense he is better than those listed.
I don’t think they sign Barbosa to an extension this year. They wait and see how he plays next season. Diaw will get locked up though.
Well if those are the type of disclaimers you’re going with, Ben Wallace is the best all around player in the NBA
When you’re completely biased and speak in absolutes with no basis for proof you can make awesome claims like that.
You all gotta be kidding me if you think the nets or cavs or any other team besides the bulls wouldn’t want Tim Thomas
He said “post defender”, not “big guy who plays great D”.
Thomas has a unique combination of strength and quickness that allows him to play up in a guy in the post without fouling out. And no one slaps down at a ball or pokes one away any better–he’s got that down.
I don’t believe the guys I mentioned above are simply ‘big guys who play great D’ and not good post defenders. I know you’re trying to make a complicated point, but I don’t quite see how a big guy who plays great D isn’t a good post defender (apologies if this comes across as condescending). This is different from a ‘big guy who plays defense inherently in the post’, such as Kaman, Bosh, modern-Shaq (for the connoisseur), Ilgauskas etc.
And the whole weak-side v strong-side debate is tough because flashy plays/stats result from helping in the weak side (Mourning). But corralling guys into your teammates/weak side is a big part of playing (good) defense.
Regardless, I think most of the guys mentioned above are absolutely better defenders in the post; straight-up, strong-side, weak-side, West-side, (*chirp* WHERE YOU AT?) than Kurt Thomas. And I absolutely have a bias ’cause back in the day at the rec. center, I could poke one away with the best. The BEST.
“And what’s with the Isiah can draft myth. He took Marcus Camby 2nd overall, Damon Stoudamire 7th overall. You could make a cat your GM and he could get two mediocre starters out of those draft slots.

I know you can dig into the archives and bring up better Isiah picks then that. Naming 3 former all-stars, one of which won the ROY award (Stoudamire, who if anybody remembers was a pretty damned good point guard before he went to Portland and started hittin’ the bong hard) isn’t really helping your argument. Camby’s injury prone, but he’s one of the best defensive and rebounding big men in the NBA. And I suggest you go back and check the ‘97 draft results, since you seem to be implying Thomas should’ve drafted somebody else since “the was zero chance [McGrady] was staying in Toronto past his rookie deal.” But you’re right; he could’ve had Kelvin Cato, Derek Anderson, Maurice Taylor, Scot Pollard, or even Jacque Vaughn. That’s right! Jacque Vaughn could’ve been had with that #9 pick in the ‘97 Draft.
yo don’t hate on my man Jacque.
and TT wanted to go to NJ…a couple times…and they have turned him DOWN.
why were the comments off last night?
I think I getcha, Motown Boy, but I’m not sure I agree. Guys who rotate over and block shots and clog up the paint and jump out at shooters are good defenders as big guys. Guys who make it tough for other big men to score from the post are good post defenders.
You have to beat the guy to his spot. You have to get up into him without fouling him. You have to be able to poke balls away frequently so your man isn’t comfortable putting the ball on the floor. And you have to know when to go “straight up” so you can defend without either fouling or getting run around. I’m sure you know this stuff.
After watching Thomas for years he seems particularly adept at this stuff. But that’s just an opinion, which is like a buttho’ in that we all have one and they usually stink!
Best,
I guess I stopped reading at: “Stoudamire, who if anybody remembers was a pretty damned good point guard before he went to Portland and started hittin’ the bong hard.”
I’ll correctly assume that you didn’t watch many Raptors games in the mid and late 90’s. Stoudamire was a mediorce point guard on an expansion team, and they basically put the ball in his hands for 40 minutes a game. Like any NBA-caliber point guard, if you take a guy and put it in his hands for 40 minutes a game he’s going to post numbers. Good point guards also post wins, and there were 67 of them in Stoudamire’s three years with the Raptors. That’s not to say he’s terrible, because they were an expansion team. But he certainly wasn’t good. Nor is there any reason for a cuss word for emphasis before “good.”
And maybe I’ve gone mad, but I think a top 10 pick should land you a guy who’s going to contribute to your franchise for more than half a season. There was no point in Toronto burning a pick on an 18-year-old who wasn’t going to see the court for a couple seasons. So yeah, that one worked out really well for them.
And by the way: three former all-stars? T. McGrady, Tracy M., and T-Mac? Help me out on that one.
So yeah, Marcus Camby second overall and Channing Frye. That’s Isiah’s claim to being a great drafter.
Why’d I type all this. No one’s reading this post anymore.
