As expected, the Cavaliers used pick #25 on someone we’d never heard of.
That’s wasn’t a tough feat, as we’d only heard of like six or seven dudes in this draft. That said, Shannon Brown…welcome to the place where nobody will ever say anything bad about you, at least until you start playing.
NBADraft.net says good things.
Strengths: Shannon is a phenomenal athlete comparable to few prior. A true highlight-film waiting to happen on the fastbreaks, he is just as likely to rise up and dunk on the defense in a half-court setting. An on-target shooter with a high-rising jumper and pretty form. A capable handle despite not having to play the point guard spot with his high school team.
He also is a solid defender when he sets his mind to shutting down his opponent. Exciting player with supreme athletic gifts, draws comparisons to Ronnie Fileds [sic]. Has the ability to play the point guard position on the next two levels. With his athleticism coupled with very large hands, bigger than his 6’9″ teammates, and long arms, he has the tools to dominate.
Ronnie Fileds should be Ronnie Fields, another guy we’ve never heard of. Shannon also once lost a dunk contest to LeBron, which has no bearing on anything one way or the other. Danny Ferry says:
“He’s a great athlete, works hard, a gym rat,” Cavs general manager Danny Ferry said. “His athleticism is off the charts. He can make the open shot, he can go to the basket. He can finish with authority.”
Anyway, this dude is stacked, and it sounds like he can play point. Before you get all upset, we’ve long said that with LeBron and Hughes, the Cavaliers don’t need a true PG. They need a guy that can play defense, dribble, pass it to the wing, then go hit open jumpers.
Sounds like Shannon Brown can do all that and penetrate like an angry young man.
Here’s TrueHoop’s profile from yesterday.
DraftExpress has brief but nice comments. Check the NBA.com profile for career highlights. (He’s a junior – hopefully that means he’s ready now.)
Shannon shares a name with this country singer, who’s also named Shannon Brown!
What are the drawbacks? Should we be as happy it appears we should be?

As Good A Role Player As SHANNON BROWN Is Gonna Be For THE CAVS, I Believe DANIEL GIBSON Is Gonna Be Even Better … If They Re-Sign DREW GOODEN, This Team Is Set To Contend For The 2007 NBA Championship–Even If FLIP Leaves … DANIEL GIBSON IS SUCH A PERFECT FIT FOR LEBRON!!!
I agree, I’ve had the chance to catch Gibson at a couple of games in the Big 12 (albeit against Baylor). The kid is solid, he’s got a really sweet outside shot, and not in the way Damon Jones has an outside shot either, I mean the kind where he makes it in the actual game.
As a Michigan State fan, I’ve seen a lot of Brown and I think you got a great player. He is a great athlete (he can FLY) with a polished game. I’ve seen him bury threes and follow with sick dunks.
I think he’ll be great in the second unit and be ready for playoff minutes in year one … assuming y’all get there. heh.
As a former Izzone member (MSU bball student section) I’ve also seen Brown play in person dozens of times. He is a great finisher and solid mid-range shooter. But this point-guard stuff suprises me a little. I think I said before in a draft speculation post-comments here a few weeks ago that Brown is hurting in the ‘handles’ dept. But Brown is not going to be a role-player (or as much of non-role player one can be playing besides James). He’s more than capable of becoming a player like Arenas or fellow Spartan J-Richardson.
Actually Gibson’s shot is a lot like Damon Jones’s. He is extremely streaky. I don’t think he had one solid game when Texas played a big time opponent on national tv. (These would be the 5 or so games of his I saw last year) His shooting percentage last year was 40.5%. That is not exactly stroking it.
I’m sure he’ll be great, especially if he really has the two heads and three arms like he does in your picture. Zaphod?
where the heck was he this year? did i miss something. after losing this finals i wondered about the guy and why didn’t he get some minutes…Gibson did do an amazing job( couldn’t expect much more) well it’s over now and i hate to say but i think that was our chance for a year or two. WE NEED A CENTER SOOO BAD IN THE 2007 draft. Z is awesome but he’s a turtle sometimes.
