LeBron James loves 2008

lebron mamba.pngRemember that thing that Stephen A Smith allegedly went to, where he learned all about LeBron James and money or whatever?

That was actually put on by LBJ and his buddies via their company, LRMR Marketing this past Monday.

What the lads did was summon all of LeBron’s endorsement peeps (to Akron, no less) and basically said, “here’s the deal, everybody.”

A good chunk of LRMR’s efforts will focus on what it has labeled the “08/08/08″ campaign. By August 8, 2008, the day the United States Olympic team is scheduled to arrive in Beijing, China, for that year’s summer Olympics, LRMR hopes to have turned Mr. James into an icon beyond the sporting world and across international boundaries.

Mr. James told Crain’s it was important to host the gathering of power-brokers in his hometown as opposed to someplace like New York or Los Angeles. “This is where I’m from,” he said. “I wanted to bring everybody here and let them know that this is a part of my life. It’s about giving something back to the community.”

We guess the reason we post this is to arrogantly say once again what we’ve said all along – if you think the “bigger stage” the NBA wants LeBron on is New Jersey or NYC…well, that’s so cute.

Over at TrueHoop, we’ve said many times via comments that the only reasons we’d fear James leaving the Cavs would be if they sucked or if Hong Kong got an NBA team.

We do this at TrueHoop because that’s where smart people hang out, and that statement you just read is the only smart thing we know to say about basketball. Or anything, really.

“Hong Kong is scary” is basically our stock answer to everything these days. You’d be surprised how smooth and brainy it sounds in the middle of almost any conversation. Try it, then report back – just not here. We’re busy and shit.

(Hey, if anyone has any ideas for a movie that could open on 10/10/10, 11/11/11, 12/12/12, or even the non-existential 13/13/13, send them in. We have a feeling those could sell on release date alone.)

Yo – here’s the LRMR homepage, too.

Wow the calendar is getting triple doubles!

I can’t wait.

As an x-pat living in Hong Kong, they won’t put an NBA team here.

Heck there was a report in our local paper about the two best young basketball players and they were both complaining the government needs to support them more.

I started screaming at the paper in the ferry calling them p*ssies and the such. Ranting about World B. Free shoveling the snow and slush off the court to play. Coleman dribbling the basketball with mittens to improve his sense of touch. Zeke making a deal with Jesus to destroy the NY Knicks.

I’m trying to figure out how to get to Guzhandou to see the games in august.

I like the LRMR page. It sounds like an 8th grader presenting his own plan for starting a business.

“We are essentially the quintessential sports marketing company.”

Try saying “essentially quintessential” 5 times fast.

I have tremendous respect for LeBron. I’ve been watching him play since he was in the 7th grade.

I would like him to be the first billionaire athlete, and I think he’ll do it. But, he needs to face reality and have Maverick and his team spend some money and hire a first class website design firm.

The current LRMR website is an embarassment to LeBron, the Cavs, the NBA, Nike, Upper Deck, Coke, etc. etc.

True, the majority of adults in this country don’t have the ability to properly word a good website, so there’s no shame in that; however, LRMR should have a polished, professional website that rivals the NBA, Getty Images, ESPN, and Upper Deck.

LRMR needs to be a tool for global penetration, not a hindrance. LeBron can’t do it all himself, just like he can’t carry the Cavs on his back.

I have tremendous respect for LeBron. I’ve been watching him play since he was in the 7th grade.

All his fans would like to see him achieve his goal of becoming the first billionaire athlete. But, he needs to face reality and have Maverick and his marketing team spend some money and hire a first class website design firm.

The current LRMR website is an embarassment–to LeBron, the Cavs, the NBA, Nike, Upper Deck, Coke, etc. etc.

True, the majority of adults in this country don’t have the ability to properly word a good website, so there’s no shame in that; however, LRMR should have a polished, professional website that rivals those of the NBA and ESPN. Not necessarily in depth and complexity, but in appearance.

LRMR needs to be a tool for global penetration, not a hindrance. LeBron can’t do it all himself– just like he can’t win a championship while carrying most of the Cavs team on his back.
