WHO SHOT MAMBA IPHONE

Shannon Brown is a point guard

We don’t want to get too ahead of ourself, but after reading about last night’s Cavaliers inter-squad scrimmage, this year’s team is one of the top 3 basketball squads to ever walk the Earth.

Okay, at least the top 3 of the last three years.

A big part of that is going to be because it sounds like head coach Mike Brown may finally have a solution to the point guard problem that has plagued the team since LeBron came onboard.

That solution? No, not new free agent signee David Wesley, and certainly not a sweatpants wearing Damon Jones. The answer is rookie shooting guard Shannon Brown, who has braids and muscles.

“For me, our (point guard, shooting guard and small forward) are interchangeable,” Brown said.

Running the point for large chunks of the workout, Brown had 12 points, two assists, two turnovers and a steal in 25 minutes. His most memorable moment was a driving dunk in traffic, but he knocked down four jumpers, including two 3-pointers, in going 5-of-11 from the field.

He played with confidence and considerable aplomb, especially since not even his teammates consider him a point guard.

“His natural position isn’t point guard, so we had him in a bad position out there because he’s a `two’ guard,” said LeBron James, who started slowly but finished with 15 points, five rebounds and two steals. “We’ve got enough point guards where he won’t have to play point guard.”

Despite using the wordset “point guard” too many times in one sentence, we think we’ve deciphered what LBJ is saying there, and it’s what we were saying all last season.

With Lebron and Hughes both being really nicely skilled ball handlers and passers, this team doesn’t need a traditional point guard.

You mainly need someone who has a decent handle, hit open shots, and D up the opposing PG. Brown, coincidentally, can so all these things, and he’s also an accomplished slasher. Hopefully the kind who can slash without the ball, since that’s his main job – pass to LeBron/Hughes on the wing and cut to the hole.

All of this after one scrimmage in little old Akron. What’s nice is that after an offseason of painfully empty NBA posts, we’re able to jump right back in to the fray, making obsessively unrealistic predictions like this new one about the Cavs winning 388 games this season.

Thank you, Shannon Brown.
