Charles Barkley is doing color

by The Cavalier on January 4, 2007 · 9 comments

SWAGRare is the time when anyone will tune in to a sporting event purely to listen to the announcing, but we have a feeling tonight’s Lakers/Kings game on TNT will see a noticable ratings jump for that very reason.

Yep, as you can allow yourself to be clued into by the post title, Charles Barkley will be commentating with Marv Albert, as Steve Kerr is out with back spasms.

We don’t think we need to explain why this should be fun, even without taking into account Barkley’s mini-beef with Kobe from last season’s playoffs.

In other TNTish news, David Aldridge has apprently been purged from the Philly Inquirer, along with a bunch of other people. How does this man not stay at the forefront of NBA reporterdom?

Is he like a huge jerkface or something? He always seems to have the most reasonable, intelligent opinions, combined with a decidedly non-shouty, “non-HARHARHAR I’m on TV and now must act like a worse version of Terry Bradshaw” demeanor.

We’ve always liked him – hopefully he doesn’t show up on NBATV, which seems to be the wasteland of “used to be on a larger network” NBA media guys.

In other news, we couldn’t help it – we had to throw some Gilbert-inspired “My Swag is Phenomenal” shirts up in The Caruthers Experience, which used to be known as the YAYsports! Store of Purchasable Items.

Charles’s swag was phenomenal when he was brodcasting. all he did was take shots at dick bavetta and say: “that’s a horrible shot” or “he can’t guard bynum” or “you’re open, so shoot the darn ball!”. his swag was phenomenal seeing as it was his first time announcing

I only watched the 4th quarter, but that was one of the worst quarters of color commentary I’ve ever heard.
He reacts too rashly, and is hard to understand.
I just don’t think he can cut it.

Believe it or not, I missed this because I was watching Rocky V.

Absolutely hilarious. Sir Charles definitely needs to be in the booth at least once a year. Too much might get old, but once, twice a year would be cool. And the fact that he was with Marv Albert was good. Any less established broadcaster might have been run over by Charles’s personality. But I thought it was hilarious. Damn job and my midnight bedtime. I couldn’t watch the 2nd half.

Zakk: The fourth quater was rough because Chuck’s Ritalin wore off… however… during the first half he was cracking some great jokes. My favourite is when he challenged Dick Bavetta to a race and if he lost promised to donate $10,000 to Marv Albert’s charity of choice.
