There’s a DJ Quik song from long ago that goes like “tonight is the niiiight (tonight), toooniii-iight is theee niiight (tonight)”.
It’s not the one where he’s playing Tecmo Bowl, but it’s on that CD.
The song popped into our head last night as we watched the Cavaliers come from 17 points down to win in Sacramento last night.
How did it happen?
Well…in the third quarter…with the game slipping permanently into “lost” mode…as old habits began to set in…a CLE time-out was called…and then…
Coach Mike went off.
If the prelude was last week’s clipboard breaking, this was the main performance. He was like yelling, and saying things emphatically, and all that other good stuff Cavs fans have been asking for. (He immediately put his hands back in his pockets after the TO, but it was refreshing to see regardless.)
The team responded, and the defensive intensity put the Kings into a horrible offensive place. The Cavs rode on that and went on to put up 70 points in the second half, winning going away. (Despite a late SAC push to come back.)
It was all quite fun, and while this recap is brief, that’s only because all we really wanted to say is we’re officially back in pro-Cavalier mode. We anxiously await their next game, which is something we haven’t felt since early November.
NOTE: Brian Windhorst points out that Coach Mike could end up as the Eastern Conference All-Star coach. Weird!

Even when SAC was going bonkers with the shot-making, I had the feeling that the Cavs would make it at least close, because it was mostly Bibby (say bibby-bibby-bibby a few times, it makes you feel better) making said shots, and he was bound to cool off from his one hundred billion degree heat check temp from the first half. And he cooled off fast, maybe too fast, and shattered into twenty pieces somewhere behind the timeline in the third quarter.
That seven plus minutes of shutout defense the Cavs put up in the third was just awesome.
I think Loog is coaching now for reals. Phoenix will be an excellent and timely test.
bibby-bibby-bibby
Bibbity.
Bnibbity.
Is Webber in the photo because you think he would be a possibility for the Cavs?! On the plus side, Z would no longer be our worst defending big man.
When I’m talkin’ Cavs Basketball and tonight being the night I can think of only one song: “Tonight’s the Night” the Michael Stanley the Great (available here: http://www.nba.com/cavaliers/history/index.html). Nothing so uniquely combines 1992 and the Cleveland Cavs. If you haven’t heard it, prepare for your ears to be blessed.
Even if Mike Brown was named the Eastern All-star’s head coach, it wouldnt mean anything, cuz he didnt deserve it. The only reason his team has the best record in the east is cuz the east sucks crap and LeBron James is awesome.
C Note – in high school that song was a running joke amongst my friends, just because – “tonight we’re gonna live a dream. Tonight the orange and blue deliver – hardworkin’ town, hardworkin’ team!” (from memory thank you). I wrote a letter to the Cavs asking for the lyrics. They sent me a tape of the song (failing to realize if I could decipher the lyrics from hearing the song, I wouldn’t have sent said letter. I see Michael Stanley downtown all the time. I wonder if he’d do a little a cappella.
The real question is, how does Tonight’s the Night rank against Tribe ’85?
My brother used to take that one went “Cavs hit the floor…” and add “Fans head for the door…” and ever since I can’t remember what it’s supposed to be.
