Tyrus Thomas is getting paid

by The Cavalier on February 7, 2007 · 3 comments

Just when one thought the apathy for the dunk contest couldn’t be any more palpable, Bulls rookie forward (and dunk competitor) Tyrus Thomas comes out and says the following.

“Not really,” Thomas said. “I’m just going to go out there, get my check and call it a day.”

Asked if an opportunity to rub elbows with some of the game’s greats could be beneficial for a rookie, Thomas kept unlacing.

“I’m just into the free money,” he said. “That’s it. I’ll just do whatever when I get out there.”

The Bulls immediately fined him $10K, and then everyone from John Paxson to PJ Brown lied how excited Thomas is to be in the contest. For his part, Tyrus says his statements were misinterpreted, which is impossible, since they’re clear as day.

Look, there’s an easy solution to this – remove the dude from it and replace him with the kid everyone wants in it – James White, who plays for somebody somewhere, but is also a dunker supreme. (Here’s some YouTube of the guy in a college dunkfest.)

Yeah, we’d say, especially after watching that, that it must be done. Otherwise we’re all looking at a major disaster. You just know Thomas is gonna try to make up for his statements at the contest by doing something retarded to honor judge Michael Jordan or something.

Like how Josh Smith donned a ‘Nique jersey a couple years ago? Seriously, if we see Tyrus Thomas do something like that with a Jordan jersey, not only will our flu come instantly back, but this time it’ll be full-blown AIDS and we’ll die. This is bad.

On the other hand, Thomas could become the first person to actively be booed during the Dunk Contest, so that could be interesting viewing, as well. The death part aside.

(Sam Smith has an absolutely scathing column on Thomas this morning. Apparently he doesn’t think much of the kid. Note that he didn’t suggest any KG trade scenarios in the piece, however. On a personal development level for Smith, this is great.)

UPDATE: The Orlando Blogger du Moustache is reporting that the NBA is trying to replace Thomas in the contest. We did it!

The YouTube video is further proof that NO ONE has ever taken off from the free throw line. All the dunks have been done. Call me when someone comes up with a new one.

what the league needs to do if they want this to be an event again is to leave the contestants up to the fans and make attendance mandatory.Cav and I share a severe case of dislike for vince but that dude can throw down and i would like to see him, Bron, and a couple other heavy hitters in the contest.
