Baron Davis is not in college

While you’re all reassessing your lives amid the wreckage of the Warriors and their strange blowout win over the Mavericks last night (breaking their 17-game win streak), here’s our official NCAA Tourney Manifesto: we haven’t even looked at the brackets yet.

Hopefully we get to it by Thursday. All we really know is that we like Ohio State because we went there and stuff. We also know of the existence of someone called Kevin Durant, although we’ve never seen him play.

(Dirty secret – we actually don’t like college hoops that much. Too hard to follow, no stars, etc, etc. We’re one of those NBA-centric people.)

THAT SAID, the guys over at NBX DOT COM have extended us an invite to participate in their Battle of the Bloggers thinigie, and we’d like to have one of you go and try to win the $100 prize and free ad space in our name.

Here’s the description of what it’s all about:

First off, just to clarify…this NOT a bracket. Instead of making your picks and sitting back passively, you will actually be betting in our fantasy sportsbook all tournament long. [THE CAVALIER note: this is where we dropped out mentally.] Point spreads, moneylines and over/unders will be there for every single game. Although, you’d probably be wise to pick your spots, since you are NOT required to bet on all 63 games.

Second, the details…
- Each player will get 100,000 point in your bankroll to start.
- You can get 1,000 “charity” points every day just to keep you in the hunt IF you go bust early.
- There’s a max bet of 10,000 points per line per game.
- “Buddy Bets” are allowed. So you can create your own odds, spreads and totals and send them out to everybody else. It’s a bit risky to be the bookie but the rewards can be huge.
- 1st Place: $100 cash, a keg of beer, AND free advertising with 1 million ad impressions from our site in April and 1 month sponsorship of our NBX Classic tournament
- 2nd Place: $50 cash, a pony keg, 250,000 ad impressions
- 3rd Place: $25 cash, a case of beer, 100,000 ad impressions

Now, not being a big gambler, we have no idea what most of that means or how to do it anyway, so this is all pretty much beyond us. We’d love to have an official rep take our place, however – the guys over there are great, the site is cool, and they sent us a free hat once, too.

You win, and you can have the money, the beer, and the ad space, although your ad must be stupid, for something completely bizarre, and approved by us. We’ll of course ask you to send in updates on your progress to post here, and make fun of you if you screw it up.

If you’d be interested in doing this for us (and for yourself), send us an email at yaysports@gmail.com and tell us why.

fyi Boney has claimed the NBX invite.

2 Boney March 13, 2007 at 10:01 am

I will represent YAY! well, I promise.

Any recommendations on particular upsets I should consider? I’ve already got VCU over Duke and Winthrop over whoever they’re playing…

3 becky March 13, 2007 at 10:29 am

bandwagon picks. good luck, though.

dirk is lazy.

4 Boney March 13, 2007 at 10:37 am

The tournament field is pretty weak this year for “underdogs” or “cinderellas”. There is no 2005 Vermont that noone knows, or a true 2006 George Mason that no one can actually see coming… I think the mid-majors that are in will get trampled by the larger schools except for like Butler, or Winthrop… eventually those teams will lose out to teams like TX, KAN, OSU, etc..

5 Fios March 13, 2007 at 10:43 am

Apparently it is a blessing if I attend a school without actually graduating from it so, like Mason last year, VCU is a lock for the final four this year

6 Frank March 13, 2007 at 11:50 am

There is no George Mason that no one can see coming eh?

7 zack k March 13, 2007 at 11:57 am

golden state owns the mavs… too bad they cant beat crappy teams and still wont make the playoffs…

8 JONESONTHENBA March 13, 2007 at 11:58 am

Who is this Boney? And who is this Fios? Whatever happened to the BDP and Lucas and Zack K? Things have changed around here this season, haven’t they? You know I can’t handle change. First the new design, and now your embrace of new commenters. Have you forgotten your roots? And you wonder why your Cavs have been struggling this year. In the words of your precious roundie: Careful Cavalier…CAAAAARRRRRREFULLLL!

By the way, I fully realize that Boney has been commenting since last year. But until he drives accross country to play you in a game of one on one, he’s no real commenter…

9 JONESONTHENBA March 13, 2007 at 12:00 pm

As soon as I write out something about Zack K, he appears. A Mavs loss and not my words obviously did the trick. But he didn’t finish his comment with “GO MAVS!” I’m sad now.

syracuse coulda done better than any of these shitty mid-major schools. SU got robbed. i hate the ncaa.

11 Boney March 13, 2007 at 1:25 pm

yeah Frank, there is no George Mason type team that no one can see coming!

12 dustin March 13, 2007 at 1:45 pm

i can feel it…mavs 5 game losing streak…

Jones I’m still around but I can’t be the commenter I once was until I see you on the big screen. Or in a poorly embedded, low quality, slow loading series of internet shorts.

Haha Boney, you’ll never beat me in 1 on 1. Sucker.

15 The Cavalier March 13, 2007 at 1:59 pm

BDP just so you know you die in the movie.

16 Brandon Dean Price March 13, 2007 at 2:02 pm

Have another light beer.

17 Boney March 13, 2007 at 2:06 pm

Believe it or not by that pic, I was once an all-district 2nd team point guard for 2 seasons in high school 9 years ago!

I used to dish dimes like Nash and rain 3s like Damon Jones!

18 mcbias March 13, 2007 at 2:08 pm

So there was a reason to get up early this morning. Who knew? Anyway, congrats, Boney. I don’t see too many upsets this year either.

19 becky March 13, 2007 at 2:42 pm

BDP gets to live if he stays away from everyone’s sisters.

20 TVBrain March 13, 2007 at 2:58 pm

Arkansas over USC. USC as a #5 is a joke.
Signed,
Bitter Marquette Alum sitting at an impossible 8 in the same Region.

21 Brandon Dean Price March 13, 2007 at 4:01 pm

What? So I’m only good enough for girls who don’t have siblings now?

22 Jack March 13, 2007 at 6:16 pm

Arkansas over USC. Book it.

23 Boney March 13, 2007 at 6:20 pm

Arkansas is horrible though… unless Corey Beck and Corliss Williamson came back?

24 Detroit Chris M March 13, 2007 at 6:51 pm

The Razorbacks’ best player is hurt.

MSU over UNC in 2nd round.

Texas A&M makes the Final Four.

Go Trailblazers!

25 quiet cardinal March 13, 2007 at 9:53 pm

louisville will be a very dangerous team in their bracket… but i’m pretty biased. i think georgetown will take it

26 Matt W. March 13, 2007 at 11:49 pm

I used to dish dimes like Nash and rain 3s like Damon Jones!

I used to make it rain like Pacman Jones … does that count for anything?

27 Jack March 14, 2007 at 12:30 am

Charles Thomas is expected to play. They are not horrible, just horribly inconsistent. They ran right through the SEC tournament until they met Florida in the championship.

28 Boney March 14, 2007 at 7:56 am

The Cavaliers are more dangerous WITHOUT ‘Bron

29 zack k March 14, 2007 at 8:39 am

this is for jones…

GO MAVS! 72-10 here we come!

30 zack k March 14, 2007 at 8:41 am

also the traitor rat will be destroyed tonight… and i will kick amare in the knee… not sure how the knee kicking will be accomplished yet…
