The big news in the NBA isn’t really the Heat’s 7-game win streak, although Team Toine is about to thrust itself into the realm of home court advantage in the first round.
No, the thing everyone’s going to be talking about today is the nationally televised match between Dallas and Phoenix tonight in Texas.
They’re arguably the two best teams in the league, and despite DAL’s recent 17-game win streak, PHX is only 3.5 games back on them for first in the conference. While catching them is improbable, that makes tonight’s game no less important, as there are NON-STATEMENTS to be made.
“I don’t think it’s critical,” [PHX's Coach Mike] said of the matchup. “I don’t think our psyche will be damaged one way or another. Maybe we can learn from it later on, but I don’t think their psyche or our psyche is such that one game will destroy it.”
Excellent use of the “multiple psyche in a sentence” technique, but we must disagree with the conclusion drawn. On Dallas’s end, they claim the same: no big deal.
THAT SAID, this game is HUGE. If Phoenix wins, then they win the NBA Championship. If Dallas wins, then Cleveland wins the NBA Championship. If it goes to an OT and PHX wins, then Miami wins the title. If it’s two OTs and gets decided by free throws, everyone goes on strike.
We won’t know the exact outcome until tomorrow, but be warmed, calmed even, by the fact that no matter what happens, the Pistons will not get rings this season.
Also, there are way too many Coach Mikes in this league, and we need a way to differentiate between them all. We have: Coach Mike CLE, Coach Mike ATL, Coach Mike PHX, and Coach Mike LAC. Actually, that’s how we’ll do it, except that Coach Mike CLE is just plain “Coach Mike”, as he was the first Coach Mike.
