YAYsports! NBA is back on Thursday

by The Cavalier on March 19, 2007 · 35 comments

Hopefully you’re too busy reeling over Houston’s 50-point margin of victory over the Seventy-Sixers or Kobe’s +/-847 points in his last two games to notice we won’t be able to post today.

Or tomorrow.

Or Wednesday.

Some of the astute readers who email to ask know what’s going on. Others will find clues elsewhere. Still others, nay MOST, don’t care either way.

It’ll likely be like this up until Playoff time – “like this” being sporadic posting. We apologize, but things that occur bring other things, which yield other things. Rest assured (and we point to those astute readers mentioned before), you can take solace in the fact we’re doing it all for you.

THAT SAID, please use this post to comment away (we will when we can) on CLE’s impending takeover of first in the East over the “no excuses, now with special excuses” DET Pistons.

(Last time we did this, it was a disaster…but if you think you’re worthy to fill the void of our absence, email us at yaysports@gmail.com. All we ask is that you not try to do an imitation of us.)

4 TVBrain March 19, 2007 at 11:08 am

Is it me, or are the Pistons playing for a home court advantage that they cannot use?

The Cavalier meet The Letdown Game.
Letdown Game, The Cavalier.

Surre glad it took overtime to lose to a last place team with a losing home record missing their best player. Just what ou need before your flight to face The German.

11 Carlo March 21, 2007 at 3:06 am

14 CoachMike March 21, 2007 at 7:18 am

I would have bet 50 bucks Sasha was going to turn that ball over.

17 zack k March 21, 2007 at 9:08 am

hey look at the bright side of things… even if lebrons game winning attempt had gone in, it wouldn’t have counted… oh wait.. thats not too bright…

GO MAVS

18 Jephos March 21, 2007 at 10:04 am

Well, a letdown, but I’ll withhold my disappointment until after tonight’s game.

19 The Cavalier March 21, 2007 at 10:13 am

If they win tonight, that might even be more disappointing, because then the Bobcats loss is even more damaging. Before, a win tonight would’ve been a bonus.

And before you jump in Boney, the Cavs almost beat Dallas in DAl a couple weeks ago, so a win at home against them isn’t unthinkable.

20 zack k March 21, 2007 at 11:05 am

the mavs dont lose on back-to-backs unless they play golden state… tonight the mavs are not playing golden state… tonight the mavs win

butttttt i fully expect lebron to go nuts again with devean george and greg buckner out again….

so my prediction… lebron scores 47

mavs win 93-47

21 Boney March 21, 2007 at 11:38 am

I always think before I jump.. with your line of thinking though then DET should have beat DAL at home since they POUNDED them earlier in the season at DAL… or am I wrong?

I think it’ll be a close game, but I think Dallas will come out on top. Now that the “emotion” from last week’s game has passed, I think Dallas is poised to run out the rest of the regular season and finish in the neighborhood of 66 wins.

I just don’t think the Cavs have enough talent. It’s not a matter of me not liking them, I could care less if it’s CLE, MIA, CHI or DET in the Finals, of course I want DET but things happen. I just think the Cavs legitimately lack the talent and depth to compete in a 7 game series with teams like DET, MIA, CHI, HOU, DAL, PHX, or SAS. They may “compete”, but I mean compete like win 4 out of 7. You may say “well we pushed DET to 7 games last year and if wasn’t for poor rebounding…”. The team has not improved this year from last, they have the same guys, the numbers are similar, the games they won have differed a bit, but overall the record is similar, the numbers are similar, everything is similar.

Teams like NYK, CLE, WAS, TOR, NJN ultimately may win 2-3 games in a series against DET, MIA, CHI by having a Sasha or a DeShawn Stevenson have a big game or 2, ultimately the depth of DET, MIA and CHI will prevail because adjustments can be made to allow only your 1 “superstar” to have to carry the load. This is why Detroit won the Finals in 2004, it’s why they continue to win throughout the years and the teams with 1 “superstar” cannot cut it. Just look at the last several teams that have won championships… look at the last several teams that have even made it to their conference finals… they have more than 1 option on offense… then look at the teams that they had to beat to make it to the finals or conference finals… 90% of the teams they had to beat had 1 “superstar” (if any) and a bunch of role players.

DET, SAS, and DAL may not win pretty games. They may not fill up the box score… they may put some of you to sleep with the way they play. They may not yell at the top of their lungs (Bron vs. Utah) when they throw down a dunk to put the nail in the coffin of a team in a game where they score only 82 points and both teams actually played horribly, but they find a way to win.

It’s a lack of talent issue in CLE. Steve Nash makes everyone around him better in PHX but shit.. he’s got Amare and Matrix… Billups makes people around him better, he’s got RIP, Wallace and Webber… Dirk makes everyone around him better? He’s got Terry, Josh Howard, and a solid young point in Devin Harris… plus he’s got Stack, Croshere and George coming off the bench. Tim Duncan? I think he’s the most boring player in the NBA, but he’s got Manu and TP.. How much better can LeBron MAKE this group of role players better? How much better can Larry Hughes get? You’re getting his max effort if you were to compare his history to now… How much better can Gooden get? He’s doing his average.. You see it’s not really working in LAL, and they even have Lamar Odom, who I would take over anyone on CLE not named Bron.

I don’t argue with you donkeys because I hate CLE, I poke jabs because it’s funny how you guys really think that 1 guy can carry a team when history proves that teams with legit depth win. If CLE proves me wrong? Good for them, it’ll be nice to see CLE win something other than the honor of being called the mistake by the lake. I’ve thought it was humorous from the jumpoff how you claimed 58 wins for a team that didn’t change or improve talent-wise. You don’t like DET why? Because they feel a sense of entitlement because they win 50 games 5 years in a row? Because they won a title recently? Because they’re cocky?

22 becky March 21, 2007 at 1:04 pm

is it thursday yet :(

23 ZAKK March 21, 2007 at 1:11 pm

I think the Cavs have a reasonable chance against the Pistons in a 7 game series. If LeBron comes to play, Anderson Varejao rebounds, Big Z rebounds, Drew Gooden rebounds, Larry Hughes makes good decisions, and Sasha Pavlovic plays like a man, they can beat most teams in the NBA.
Not the Suns, though.

24 Carlo March 21, 2007 at 1:17 pm

It’s one of the hundreds of NBA-clichés, but on any given night, any team can beat any team in the league. A loss tonight wouldn’t be the end of the world for Dallas. It might even be a good thing in the long run.

25 Boney March 21, 2007 at 1:46 pm

1. LeBron
2. AV
3. Z
4. Hughes (iffy, especially considering he needs to make good decisions)
5. DG
6. Sasha

5 of the 6 guys you listed are the starters. Exactly what I was saying in my post earlier. No depth, no true “go to” outside of LeBron, and counting on Z, DG, and AV to all rebound AND Hughes to make good decisions is like counting on CWebb and Maxiell to contain Shaq and asking Rasheed to not take 3 point bombs with 20 seconds left on the shot clock… It may work 1 or 2 out of 7 games, but it’s not going to work enough to win 4 in a row, especially the way momentum shifts in the playoffs.

Chicago didn’t have to worry IF Jordan was going to come to play… Boston didn’t have to worry about any of their guys coming to play… why should Coach Mike and the rest of CLE have to worry about whether or not LeBron comes to play? If he wants to be a multi-trillionare mega marketing mogul, he needs to win… otherwise he’ll be nothing more than Dan Marino, Allen Iverson, Dominique Wilkins… he’ll be highlight reel material with nothing that matters in the sport that he plays, and that’s rings.

26 UWISHUWEREMIAH March 21, 2007 at 5:06 pm

Why does it matter what the Cavs,Mavs or any other team ending in avs is doing? The Suns are just playing with the league until they crash the playoff party this year and walk away with the title. All hail the most entertaining team in basketball! I’m building a shrine to Nash on the corner of Madison and Central in PHX if any one is interested in sacraficing a Bull, Grizzly, or Bobcat tonight at midnight BE THERE! I’m also interested in sacrificing a Lake and a Heat at the shrine of Nash if anyone has any ideas on how to do that let me know. Cavalier come back! Peace.

27 Boney March 21, 2007 at 7:09 pm

Suns? please.

If your team, at full strength, can’t impose it’s will on a team like Detroit (that clearly can’t run with PHX), then your team will continue to be 2nd or 3rd best.

28 zack k March 21, 2007 at 7:44 pm

the suns will not make it past the 2nd round of the playoffs when they lose to the spurs

29 ZAKK March 21, 2007 at 8:32 pm

You’ve been heard, Boney, and the Suns may be 2nd or 3rd best, but not behind the Pistons.
That demolition last week was after quite possibly the best game of the season, and I hate to make excuses like this, but they just didn’t really look like they wanted to play that day.
And I don’t think those two losses by a combined 46 points are really anything to worry about.

30 TVBrain March 21, 2007 at 8:38 pm

Boney,
You’re right, we’re all fools. Let’s just fold up this tent and give up. It’s amazing how bad we suck, yet are still only 2.5 games behind the almighty team concept that is DEtroit BASKETball. We’re even ahead of that super team The Chicago Bulls. Alas, we’re all kidding ourselves. Go back to your lives citizens.

31 zack k March 21, 2007 at 8:38 pm

33 zack k March 21, 2007 at 10:54 pm

glad i dont have to watch 82 cavs games a year… i feel for you cav…

34 Boney March 22, 2007 at 8:03 am

TVBrain

I didn’t say to fold up and quit for the year and that the Cavs have no shot. I said the Cavs’ problem is their lack of talent. I’d be worried if the Cavs had Mike Bibby (maybe they’ll get him in the off-season?), but since they actually have 3-12 .250 FG% Larry Hughes running the point, no need to be worried… I mean if we’re being honest. He did have a solid passing game last night, I guess he had like 7 assists and only 1 TO right?

ZAKK? I didn’t say the Suns are behind the Pistons, I said they’re 2nd or 3rd best in the league, and clearly that means behind DAL and SAS. I’ll admit though ZAKK, that was awfully fun watching Detroit beat the hell out of your boys, whether they wanted to be there or not.

Tough loss last night for the Cavs. From what I heard, it was a hard game to watch. Hey, maybe I’m wrong about the Cavs, maybe they can make a difference in the playoffs. What do I know? It’s not like I’m smart like John Hollinger or anything… All I do is read the numbers, look at the wins and losses and review the trends prior to making decisions or statements. The numbers don’t lie, history doesn’t lie, and the ball don’t lie.
