They’re Gr-r-reat!! NBA Awards Time

(The Cavalier is on an extended leave of absence. He did not write this, however he wrote me a strongly worded email about my continued use of cereal slogan use.)
It’s that time of the year again kids where NBA players get trophies that they can sell later in life to pay for their medication because they’ve squandered all their money (long sentence, eh?). This year the awards are pretty easy to figure out but I’ve thrown some interesting selections in there. Following are my choices for the top NBA Awards……
Most Valuable Player - Dirk Nowitzki, Dallas Mavericks - He’s led the Mavs to the best record in the NBA while averaging 25 points and 9 rebounds a game. This is his year to win the MVP. If the Mavs don’t win the title (which they won’t), he’ll be hard pressed to win the MVP again.
Coach of the Year - Mike Brown Avery Johnson, Dallas Mavericks - Johnson wins this for his sustained excellence throughout the regular season. After their NBA Finals debacle last season I wondered how the Mavs would respond this season and they have been firing on all cylinders all season.
Rookie of the Year - Brandon Roy, Portland Trail Blazers - Roy has been averaging nearly 19 points and 5 assists since the All-Star Break and that’s enough to win this award since the foreign guy went Splat! and Mr. Moooostache never showed up.
Defensive Player of the Year - n/a - I don’t believe in this award because it’s the NBA. Too many players coast through games and there are too many games where defense is unheard of. I’ll give a team defense award to the San Antonio Spurs if I must fill out this column.
Most Improved Player - Josh Smith, Atlanta Hawks - He’s averaging 16 points, almost 9 rebounds, over 3 blocks and 1.5 steals per game this season…….all of these have increased from last season. On top of that he’s become a focal point for the Atlanta offense and (cough, cough) defense.
Sixth Man of the Year - Leandro Barbosa, Phoenix Suns - He would be starting every night on most every team in the NBA and he has a cool sounding name. That’s enough for me.
Onto the formal introductions…..For those of you that don’t know me I’m Jack Cobra from 3ManLift.com. Since beginning this gig at YAYSports I’ve received quite a few emails about my ‘underlying sarcasm’ that comes out in my writing. I even had a fine woman I used to date make contact with me and tell me that not only does my writing have an ‘underlying sarcasm’ to it, but so does my life. I’m not sure what that means but I don’t think it was a compliment. I don’t even know where the underlying sarcasm comes from, so to her I say, “Chew on cheerio’s”. You can contact me at jackcobra@3manlift.com with your tips, suggestions, links, etc.

I never thought I’d write this… but what about Sam Mitchell for coach of the year?
What about exec of the year? It’s gotta go to BC for the amazing job he did turning around the Raps this season - ever move he’s made has been golden (even snagging Luke Jackson who was crap for the Cavs).
In defense of the foreign guy, he did have to overcome the difficulties of being named Andrea.
It’s hard to vote for a guy being Coach of the Year when it seems like they are pushing him out the door in Toronto. I know Girardi won last year in MLB, but it’s very rare. Toronto has been playing extremely well and I’m sure Mitchell will get some votes, but I think Lil’ Avery is going to win again this season.
