Kevin Garnett is a Celtic

by The Cavalier on July 30, 2007 · 84 comments

UPDATE: This appears to officially be a done deal.

Here in the doldrums of NBA summer, it’s nice to have a big old ongoing trade rumor allegedly turn into a piece of near fact.

According to places all over the place, Kevin Garnett to the Celtics is back on. Not only that – it’s supposed to be all but done.

Multiple sources close to the situation told DraftExpress Sunday that the Boston Celtics and Minnesota Timberwolves have come to terms on a trade exchanging Kevin Garnett for a package including Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair, and Theo Ratliff. The exact details of the trade aren’t known at this point, but it is believed that the deal will be completed shortly with similar parameters.

There must be more to it than that to make the salaries match, but the “more” certainly isn’t any star-level talent – Boston doesn’t have any other than Ray Allen and Paul Pierce, who they’re obviously keeping. (The intent here would be to form the most powerful trio in the Eastern Conference.)

Of course, Boston’s draft picks for next year would be in the teens at the highest, so basically Minnesota is getting destroyed in this deal. Like majorly. Al Jefferson could turn out to be an All-Star one day, but…man.

This whole scenario is crazy AND scary, especially when you read that KG will possibly get a $125 extension. Scary – we said it.

The big fear isn’t the Celtics threatening the Cavaliers returning to the Finals, but more the Celtics fans driving everyone insane with declarations of grandeur for the next 3 months leading into the season. Of course, that will all calm down when they can’t get the ball past half court more than twice during the entire exhibition season.*

In other news, if you’re a fan of awesome fight scenes and SCREAMING, this is for you. We have no idea what this is other than we guess it’s from something called “Undefeatable”, but we love it. (NOTE: Some graphic violence included.)

The end is especially great, where both the guy and the girl spout their cheesy goodbye line to the villain. Like the writers couldn’t decide which was better, so they just included both.

*We know, we know…Rajon Rondo is the greatest point guard of all time. We KNOW.

the celtics will win the next several championships. then when garnett retires, rajon rondo, the greatest point guard of his generation, will switch to the center position and win 17 straight MVPs before retiring and running for president.

yea i know it sounds conservative but we’re being cautiously optimistic over here.

Someone needs to have the courage to call this deal scary.

3 Fios July 30, 2007 at 9:30 am

IMDB’s plot summary: Kristi Jones (Cynthia Rothrock) avenges her sister’s death at the hands of a crazed martial arts rapist.
I’m not even certain how you go about raping a martial art

Why do I have the feeling that Danny Ainge is trying to guilt Kevin McHale by saying “Red would have wanted ONE of his ex-Celtics to be a decent front-office type, and you know Larry won’t pull it off this year either”? ha.

This strongly reminds me of the 1996-1998 Rockets. Pulling together aging superstars will not result in a championship.

6 The Cavalier July 30, 2007 at 10:04 am

True, although KG/PP/Ray aren’t quite as old as Barkley/Drexler/Hakeem/Pippen were when they went at it.

7 Jack Cobra July 30, 2007 at 10:31 am

The Celtics would be better off trying to trade their entire team and playing with only Garnett and Rondo. Only then would they win the championship.

8 Boney July 30, 2007 at 10:36 am

getting Garnett still isn’t as big as that Larry Hughes signing of a few years ago

why isn’t anyone talking about the constant home burglaries of chubby, chicago-dwelling NBA players?

13 dave July 30, 2007 at 10:56 am

I just feel sorry for KG. With all the racists here in Boston he’s probably not going to be able to leave the house. Look out! There’s one hiding in the shrubs!

SLAVA MEDVEDENKO!!!!!!!!!!!!

15 Detroit Chris M July 30, 2007 at 11:19 am

Boston is about to be robbed of its future.

16 dave July 30, 2007 at 11:31 am

whatever. the future is now. pull the trigger danny

17 Carlo July 30, 2007 at 11:48 am

Agreed, fuck the future. “Future” and “upside” are Atlanta-words.

18 Carlo July 30, 2007 at 11:50 am

And SMALL forward.

19 Jack Cobra July 30, 2007 at 11:59 am

I just heard that the Celtics didn’t want KG and traded for Mark Teixeira instead. Danny Ainge is a genius.

20 dave July 30, 2007 at 12:02 pm

dude, teixeira has a great OBP. I hope you’re right.

also, i’m hearing now they will include ryan gomes in the deal as well, so i think the celtics are running out of players. let me be the first to say this isn’t a horrible deal for the t-wolves. i mean if you’re looking to rebuild this is generally the way to go about doing it.

21 dave July 30, 2007 at 1:14 pm

wow. the boston globe is now reporting that AL Jefferson is NOT part of the deal. this sounds crazy to me, but its all right there in black and white.

22 Boney July 30, 2007 at 1:22 pm

Cav, let’s compare apples to apples if you want an argument with me. We all know how many good centers are in the league, there are far more good SG than C.

Pick another player, please.

23 Carlo July 30, 2007 at 2:15 pm

Boston Globe now says Jefferson is back in the mix.

24 Crunch July 30, 2007 at 2:44 pm

McHale is brilliant. Take young players from a team that couldn’t win 25 games, subtract your best player and add young players to a now crappier team that barely won 30 games without said best player, shake. Results: horrible team built on a wing and a prayer. I know this is considered rebuilding, but Boston was trying to rebuild with these guys and it didn’t work, does McHale think Ricky Davis can lead this group of young talent better than Paul Pierce? Good luck with that.

25 Jesus July 30, 2007 at 2:45 pm

Who wrote the dialogue for the fight scenes? When he’s fighting the girl she says ‘HUT HUT HA!’ three times in a row with exactly the same inflection.

Also, when someone’s trying to kick you in the side, you don’t lift your arms up and let them.

26 The Festiva July 30, 2007 at 4:45 pm

I’ve gotta say it. For Boston, Al Jefferson is better than Garnett.

Unless he can get into Zo’s steroids. Of course at that point, the combined unnecessary screaming and flexing would kill us all.

27 Boney July 30, 2007 at 5:19 pm

Al Jefferson can’t even guard Amir Johnson!

28 Carlo July 30, 2007 at 7:16 pm

Amir Johnson is the worlds best player, of course he can’t guard him.

29 Boney July 30, 2007 at 8:17 pm

I wouldn’t say all that, but he did put up a double double on Al Jefferson

30 Detroit Chris M July 31, 2007 at 12:13 am

From Stern’s viewpoint, this sure beats the hell out ‘Ref Scandal’, and can take some competing headlines from Bonds and NFL camps. Vick should just quit football now and try-out for the Celtics PG spot. And c’mon, KG didn’t want to go to Chicago considering the probability of being robbed.

Go Harrington!

31 KG is green July 31, 2007 at 4:03 am

another green jersey for KG. does boston still have wally’s world? the people on this team really like green

32 Jack Cobra July 31, 2007 at 7:26 am

good thing they have rondo to pass the ball to these guys. he’s going to average 1,000 assists per game. screw it, they are going to change from calling them assists to calling them rondo’s.

33 grifter July 31, 2007 at 8:13 am

ha!
i declare jack cobra the thread winner.

and there’s no way KG gets robbed if he went to chicago.
his body mass index isn’t nearly high enough.

34 Boney July 31, 2007 at 8:52 am

Jack is right, at least the Celts don’t have to worry about Rondo clanking jumpshots off the rim anymore since they have all the studs on offense.

35 doble boga pilipino pride July 31, 2007 at 9:32 am

damn put him in the lakers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

36 STILLAJEW July 31, 2007 at 11:06 am

Dude, I’m soooooo going to call assists Rondos from now on. Best comment of the day….

37 The SP July 31, 2007 at 1:07 pm

Kendrick Perkins will not get the ball whatsoever. Look at their bench, it’s going to be awful. What’s going to happen when one or more of the big 3 is out? They’ll be good but they won’t be great.

38 grifter July 31, 2007 at 1:20 pm

well, look at new jersey.
boston has the benefit of one of their big three not being vince carter.

39 dave July 31, 2007 at 1:40 pm

they will sign someone with the MLE, either a backup big man or point guard.

40 Andykat July 31, 2007 at 3:17 pm

The Celts all star threesome will win the world 3-on-3 championship and that will be about it. Has anyone looked at who’s left on the Boston roster? I think it’s Chuck Nevitt, Slick Watts and Corleone Young, but maybe I misread it. Certainly no one better than those guys. The Nets couldn’t get out the second round with an All Star threesome and they had a supporting cast. Kendrick Perkins and Leon Powe aren’t going to get it done.

41 The Festiva July 31, 2007 at 5:21 pm

Seriously, Boston gave away 4 prospects (one probable all star), 2 first round draft picks, AND an expiring contract for a “superstar?” Philly must feel like Eddy Curry right now.

I concur, Cobra wins.

42 dave July 31, 2007 at 5:24 pm

i see. all of a sudden the celtics youngsters are so wonderful. a week ago we were overvaluing them and couldn’t get anything for them.

43 The Festiva July 31, 2007 at 5:33 pm

The celtics sucked because they had 37 guys last year with less than 2 years of nba experience. That’s right, they had 46 guys on the roster with less than 1 year of playing in the same league as andre “rondo” miller. The kids aren’t bad.

too much?

44 Jack Cobra July 31, 2007 at 7:52 pm

Um, I’m kind of afraid to admit this but I just watched that video for the first time. Two things came to my mind:

1) That had to be a re-enactment of the battle Danny Ainge and Kevin McHale had to decide whether or not McHale would take Bassy Telfair in the deal….

2) The trailer for that God Damn movie better be on the previews before WSM?

45 Boney July 31, 2007 at 9:04 pm

Celtics didn’t give up anything for this deal other than an expiring contract and Al Jefferson, honestly…

hopefully one of the 3 old men don’t pull a hammy or something, that bench is looking mighty thin right now dave

46 STILLAJEW July 31, 2007 at 11:08 pm

Isn’t Jalen Rose poking around the league looking for a job? Maybe he can jump into celtics green for vet minimum. Or possibly PJ Brown. Does this mean Kendrick Perkins starts at center? With KG at PF. P DUB at swing. Ray Ray at Guard and Rondo at Point. Is that right, if not someone tell me what the expected starting line up is please. I’d sincerly like to know.

47 Jack Cobra July 31, 2007 at 11:11 pm

STILLAJEW, you have it wrong. Rondo is actually going to be playing point guard and center. The Celts are just going with four players next season. They don’t want that fifth guy to get in the way of their dynasty.

49 grifter August 1, 2007 at 7:36 am

no jack, the fourth player is gonna be glen ‘big BABY’ davis.
lucky for them, he counts as two people.

50 dave August 1, 2007 at 8:14 am

yes, the bench is looking extremely thin. i’ll be interested to see who they sign in the coming days. ainge made it pretty clear at the press conference that they still had more transactions to make.

i’ll miss big al though. thats all i can say.
