WHO SHOT MAMBA IPHONE

The readership is going Philly on YAYsports! NBA

by The Cavalier on September 11, 2007 · 39 comments

Famed and valued commenter Boney has issued an open letter to us on his blog.

Portions are excerpted below – you can read the whole thing at the link in the previous sentence.

Dear “The Cavalier”,

Over the course of the last 2 NBA seasons and the 2005 NBA Eastern Conference Semis we have grown fond of your little website, and at times, we have become jealous that we are not as witty or clever as you are…

You see, Cav… we can call you Cav right? You have devoted your full attention to making a movie that has been hyped more we think than any of the recent Tom Cruise movie releases…[Cav note: This is blatantly untrue!]

Now we know it must be hard to lead a hollywood [sic] lifestyle and all, but over the course of the last year you have begun to push us all away…

We are not alone in making the following demand:

“Come back, or else.”

…it’s just that Cav, we know the type of game you bring to the table. Unlike LeBron, there’s no worry about you not bringing your “A” game to the table. When you’re on, you’re among the best…. and over the last year, you haven’t been on and it’s a shame.

We had a whole long response to this written, but we just deleted it.

Look, do you want to watch your favorite comedians tell the same jokes for 3 straight years, or do want to see them EVOLVE? We did Photoshop – we did “witty commentary” – why continue? We proved everything we can there. We’re taking things up 10 levels. 100 levels. INFINITY levels. And then we’re leaving the internet FOREVER, so our aspirations and will no longer trouble you so.

We set out to do something, then we went and did it, and you’ll get to see it. (FOR FREE. COMPLAIN ABOUT THAT.)

Those of you who remain, thank you for your patience. Those of you who don’t, see you in crow-eating room at the Anti-Mamba Revenge Squad HQ.

(And Boney…”or else” what?)

Or else he will eat you with maple syrup while at a Bob Evans Restaurant

2 Brad Williams September 11, 2007 at 11:03 am

I feel bad saying it, Mr. The Cav. He has a point. I used to recommend that other people check out your website because it was clever, informative, and funny. Around, the scoop jackson incident you started to suck donkey balls, and I got so frustrated with you that I took you out of my bookmarks. I have to get really bored to want to check you out. I must admit that I keep on hoping that you will get your mojo back. I keep checking your website in hopes that my funny friend will come back to entertain me. I know you don’t get paid for this, but it seems like you have lost some of your joy in writing, and maybe Scoop took your soul.

Heres hoping you get the mojo back.

Brad

How do you pick the game ball?

Cav,
I love you to death, however, my happiness does not hinge upon whether or no you update the YAY regularly.
I fully support you in your chosen course of action and look forward to WSM, overhyped or not.

Boney,
You seem like a nice guy and I have no problem with you.
HOWEVER, the fact you took the time to write that I think indicates you should sit the next couple plays out, probably pick up an extra hobby or something.

Just my 2.

4 The Cavalier September 11, 2007 at 12:35 pm

Brad don’t feel bad saying it – I know it’s true, and I was probably the first one to say it. If you guys read way back to when this all was at its peak (Jan-June 2006), I said one day I would get bored and quit, with no explanation and no farewell post.

That day came over a year ago – you can only Photoshop so much stuff and do the same schtick for so long before it gets old. There’s no way to keep it fresh, and a blog does not lend itself to introducing a cute kid to liven things up. But…

The snake movie necessitates that I keep a web presence. The good thing is, everything you used to love about YAYsports! is alive and well in that snake movie, and amped up to 1,000,000%. One thing I have never been with any of you is full of $#it. You’ll thank me when it’s over!

5 Boney September 11, 2007 at 12:39 pm

Becky,

In reply to your comment, I offer the following:

1. I have hobbies.
2. This used to be my “go to” blog for the funny. Now it’s fallen so far that I’ve resorted to reading political blogs to find humor…
3. Why sit out a play? It’s about time for The Cavalier to be called out. I wasn’t mean about it, I put down what the whole entire “blogosphere” thinks…

I know it’s not The Cav’s fault that he chooses to big time everybody for his own personal gain. Hell, I would do it too! But I would make a movie and then *ta da!* release on your punkasses in a manner that would make you not know what hit you!

In closing, I respect Cav’s decision to do what he’s doing. I think it’s great that once this movie is over with, he’ll be gone from the internet forever…. he should be good at being gone, because he’s getting an awful lot of practice now!

xo,
Boney

Personally, I love it when bloggers attack one another. It’s a shame that my level of excellence is so low that no one has called me out for my rather boring juggling and RSC posts all summer long. But it’s good to hear that the Cavalier is going to take things to a Whole (pause) ‘Nother (pause) Level (pause). Yes, I like Mad TV, and I realize I’m their only viewer, ha.

Anyway, I’ll continue to visit this site, even though my usual response after typing “yaysports.com” into my browser is to smack myself and say “You dummy, it’s not Friday yet. Why did you check the site, you know there’ll be nothing there. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid!” That or I try to start a flame war in the comments because I’m so bored (um, sorry about that).

7 The Cavalier September 11, 2007 at 1:51 pm

Boney if you haven’t noticed the project has evolved into something a little bigger than intended when this all started – had I known what it was going to end up things, things would’ve gone much diffferently. Remember May the 5th of 2006 – MAMBA was gonna be a ten-minute short.

As it stands, the final product is phenomenal, and that’s all that matters to me on that front.

8 The SP September 11, 2007 at 2:24 pm

I hate all of you.

9 Jack Cobra September 11, 2007 at 2:39 pm

Other than the initial announcing of when WSM? would come out I think The Cavalier has been very upfront with everyone. I’m not sure what you guys expect, or need from him. The dude is working on something that obviously means a lot to him and he’s not going to put out an inferior product just for the sake of meeting a deadline which was based on a 10 minute short being made.

For all the entertainment he’s given you in PhotoShopping, posting, witty comments, and video shorts (NBA Previews) over the past few years, you guys (and Boney specifically) are sure turning your back on him.

I’d like to see the movie now, but I’m willing to wait because I know it’s going to be quality.

The ‘blogosphere’ is an interesting beast because there are so many different outlets of which to get quality content. I guess the question is, are you a person who is going to jump from site to site like a whore in search of your next fix or are you going to settle down and relax for a little while because what you have works just fine?

All in all, stop complaining, yo. He’s doing this movie to entertain you.

10 JEREMIAH September 11, 2007 at 2:41 pm

After the movie is over, and your ready to…you know…pull the plug, can you like put one last photoshop up for old times sakes. Something that will put a smile on my face while I make STILLAJEW drink the Kool Aid and then drift slowly off to heaven where YAYSPORTS never started to suck.

I have to say that as much as some of you hate us here at ASU we would have never started posting if the blog was still entertaining.

We are like small children, while Barney is on we are entertained, but turn that entertainment off or put on something boring like educational TV and suddenly we turn into monkeys in a zoo and start flinging our poo all over the place!

I’m going to let STILLAJEW post something now since this string seems like everyone is saying good bye to a dieing, but not quite dead, funny old grand father in his death bed.

Good Bye Grampy Yaysports, and I’ll never forget the hundreds of ways you inappropriately touched me…

11 STILLAJEW September 11, 2007 at 2:47 pm

2 freakin years of reading this website in our dorm and possibly a total of 6 posts between us until a month ago. I never thought of the throwing poo concept but I’ll agree with it. I guess I did just get bored and started flinging poo. I’m sorry Cav. You were the best, and it may be time to go old yeller on your ass but we’ll wait until the movie comes out. I had to tell Boney to put the shot gun down.

(Patting Boney on the back.) Not yet Boney, not yet.

12 roger September 11, 2007 at 2:47 pm

While we can gripe about anything under the sun, as readers we come and go here at our leisure and the creator of a blog has that same right. The Yay is not a public utility. The Yay does not guarantee service nor do we make any sort of payment to expect said service to be uninterrupted. At 10 dollars, I very well may have been the sole funder of the MambaMovie, but I was not foolish enough to believe my contribution guaranteed either a movie or a continued “internet presence,” as it were. It was like so many pennies in a wishing well.

I subscribe to the blog and comments’ RSS feeds and – hey it’s bold – read things as they are posted. Surely the Snake flick will catapult the Cav to heretofore unknown heights. At that time, we will have to get our fill from the E! News Top Ten stories – “The Cav, while sporting a styrofoam cup of wine, was seen leaving posh Hollywood diner, Ranger HQ, with controversial friend Mamba . . .” The Yay is dead! Long live the Yay!

13 Boney September 11, 2007 at 3:31 pm

Jack Cobra,

I can assure you that I’m not “turning my back on” anything the Cavalier is doing. I’ll still come here and make fun of your posts and learn things from Jordi…

You know I always have to be around so we can see the McBias comments… those things are like sightings of the Loch Ness Monster… when you see one, you just have to sit there and read and re-read it until you’ve memorized it because you aren’t going to see one for another who knows when.

All in all, the idea of the movie is great. I would be jealous of it if in fact I could sit behind the camera. But considering the drama queen that I am, you know I need to have all the attention on me. Cav knows why I said what I said, it wasn’t malicious…

Hopefully one day we can all go back to singing kumbaya (sp?) and reading “interviews with hideous men” knock-offs… no? too over the top?

14 becky September 11, 2007 at 4:10 pm

I think you missed my point, my dear Boney.
I was trying to find a nice way to say, “If you really care enough about the Cav’s posting schedule to write a whole blog post about it (which I didn’t even feel the need to read in its entirety), you need to get a life.”

15 Boney September 11, 2007 at 4:26 pm

it was intended to light a fire under everyone’s favorite Cavs’ fan, and to drum up a humorous response… which it sorta did. it’s not that I honestly care about the Cav, this site or his posting schedule, or what any of it’s contributors think about me or what I write.

I took a minute to comment on something that we were all kinda sorta asked to pimp a little bit, and well, as the unofficial spokesman of the wherever-the-haters-of-the-WSM?-release-delay-hang-out on this site, other haters have called upon me to make a statement!

16 mcbias September 11, 2007 at 4:44 pm

JC, I bought all your comment at first, but then I got to thinking. The Cavalier gets advertising on his site (which most of us don’t) and has over 2000 Myspace friends. He gets compensated for this site more than most of us do for our sites. Let’s not act as if he’s just a small-time blogger running a Mom-and-Pop lemonade stand. Now he has every right to commit blog suicide if he wants. But if some of his readers have gotten unduly attached and can’t dump the Cavalier at a moment’s notice, they have the right to complain, too. I check this site more than I check espn.com, no lie; of course, I’m disappointed when there’s nothing to read. I’m not in the complainer camp just yet, but let’s just say I’m not throwing away their tracts and brochures as quickly as before.

Becky, the whole post probably took Boney 10 minutes to write. Why the backlash? If he had spent 10 minutes on the phone complaining about the Cav to someone, it would be fine. But because it’s written out, he’s a loser? The man likes the site a lot, is all. Better to have feelings and express them then have none at all and just ruthlessly cut ties whenever something/someone isn’t any good anymore.

17 Jack Cobra September 11, 2007 at 5:03 pm

MCB….my point is that The Cavalier has kept everyone up to date with what’s going on and why things are they way they are. It’s not like he’s pulling a blindfold over anyone. Has it taken longer than expected? Yes. Then you have to ask yourself why it’s taken longer than expected and use a little reasoning. Do you think he’s working on a 5-10 minute NBA Preview here? Don’t you think he feels pressure to make this movie as close to perfect as possible? Don’t you think he’s working hard to entertain you people?

Come here and throw a jab every once in awhile, I understand that. To sit here and rail on the guy every day after he’s entertained everyone for so long seems like too much to me.

It’s kind of like my buddy who won’t ask his girlfriend to marry him yet. I give him a hard time every once in awhile but they treat each other right and eventually it will happen…I just have to be patient because my reward will be a very nice open bar.

Just relax, this thing is happening. All the complaining in the world isn’t going to make it happen any quicker.

Hop off the blogspot wagon and you’ll have advertising and be able to swim in the money like the rest of us.

18 becky September 11, 2007 at 5:16 pm

no, I’m pretty sure if he were on the phone complaining, “My favorite blogger isn’t posting that often anymore” to someone, that would be even more sad.
anyway, it’s not backlash, like I said, I tried to say it nicely.
the fact you’re all trying to turn this into discourse frustrates me as a giant waste of time.
maybe it’s just the fact that my life has kind of fallen apart and gotten hectic and I don’t have as much time for the internet anymore, so I understand where the Cav is coming from.
or maybe I just think that if you’re disappointed in the output, that’s all good and well and all but a) the Cav is aware of the situation as it is; and b) there are probably a hundred more constructive things to do with your time, and guess what? a hundred other blogs you can go read in the meantime if you’re that freaking bored.

19 mcbias September 11, 2007 at 5:35 pm

Jack Cobra, I do appreciate the Cavalier’s updates, and my blog too has been lousy lately because I have new obligations in my life. I have to be honest and say perhaps I’m projecting a little; I had hoped to get a video project off the ground this summer, and didn’t, and that perhaps is why I’m getting antsy about the Cavalier’s progress. But at this point I shall remain in the camp of the Yaysports believers. I’m just saying, though, that the Cav is not just any blogger (which he reminds us of on occasion, ahem), and thus he should be prepared for a little more scrutiny as well as our usual outsized affection for his photoshop/writing/video skills.

Becky, ok, that’s fair. I just was trying to clarify that where else is Boney going to complain about blogs except on the web? He’s a big fan of the site, even though he usually tries to hide it with his Pistons propoganda, err, truth. His heart’s in the right place, I think; we just all are working through our grief and breakup with Yaysports.com in different ways. Some of us post open letters; some of us cry softly into our T-shirts; others work on our extensive “double entrendes using Mamba to make about WSM?” list to publish as soon as the movie comes out. But yes, I have to agree with you; I do need to read less blogs, personally speaking. I’ve recently moved, and this is my way of killing time while I’m trying to build new connections. Got to cut down on it if I’m posting 500-word comments to near-strangers in comment sections.

20 The Cavalier September 11, 2007 at 5:55 pm

For the record, people can say whatever they want. It bothers me not a bit. And I’ll be the first one to say this place has gone way, way, way downhill – let’s not forget that I’m the one who put the thing on “blog suicide” status. The difference is I know why and am okay with it. When you know why, you will be, too.

But…ahem…WSM? is not a “video project”. Oh, my…you best prepare yourself better for what’s coming. lol

21 John R. September 11, 2007 at 6:18 pm

Shaun Livingston is not surprised by this response.

22 mcbias September 11, 2007 at 7:13 pm

The Cavalier, please, tell thy humble servants what the proper title is for thy new creation, rather than “video project”. :-)

23 scott kohn September 11, 2007 at 8:16 pm

these types of letters always make me. seriously dude, these guys write this blog for our entertainment (and hopefully theirs). they put a lot of hard work into amusing us, and not getting paid for it. seriously, you guys have given me some of the best basketball related laughs outside of OneAnswer’s realgm thread.

BTw when WSM comes out, will we be have to pay for it. and if so, how much. and i hope i didn’t just give you an idea.

24 The Cavalier September 11, 2007 at 8:48 pm

It’ll run online for free and only at whoshotmamba.com for a limited time – post broadband-release DVD will obviously cost money.

25 jjc58 September 11, 2007 at 10:39 pm

Just give us a head’s up.

Shoot, I’ve been calling for a readership boycott for at least 6 mos. But I can’t stay away. I come back time and time again, put up with Jack Cobra’s crap, waiting for either more of the same Old Cavalier, or, even against my hope of hopes, that he got the damn snake movie up and running.

And Cavalier, with all this “blog suicide” and Kaiser Soze crap you’ve been talking, I’m starting to worry about you.

Just do us all a favor and stay away from masturbatory self-asphixiation…

26 Jordi September 11, 2007 at 10:41 pm

Ok, I figured I would finally appear at this collective eulogy. Come on people, if you are that bored with the Cav, swing on by The Serious Tip. For real. My folks could use the company.

What do you want?
Basketball coverage? Go see Henry Abbott.
Humor? Dave Barry has a blog.
Wittiness? Go see Jack Cobra. On second thought … I’m sure there is someone else.

Boney, I don’t think I have ever read a post (talking about yours) that had more homoerotic undertones for another blogger. When my “work’s porn filter blocked out your ray of sunlight from my day” did I cry and write a letter to you? Well, ok, but I didn’t spray my cologne all over it? No.

Although I don’t really understand why the Cav didn’t recruit another stable of substitutes, that’s his bidness. Personally I like this whole “WSM?” game he is playing. It’s like “A Christmas Story” when Ralphie gets his decoder ring. But I swear if WSM is an Ovaltine ad, I’ma cap someone.

27 JTExperience September 11, 2007 at 10:50 pm

Cav, you are Brave and Kind. Saddened though I am that the site has gone downhill, the thought of WSM? keeps my hope alive. Do your work sir, and we’ll all celebrate when your dream is realized.

28 The Cavalier September 11, 2007 at 11:51 pm

There are no dreams. There is only reality. The nice thing about this is that the reality will be dreamlike.

Ranger Corps to the rescue.

29 Detroit Chris M September 12, 2007 at 1:37 am

I get it. I think I finally get it.

I shot mamba.

Dear Caviar,
At one point in time I loved your website. I liked zoobas too. Karl Winslow. Pokemon. Crystal Pepsi. Caviar, your the new Crystal Pepsi, here today, gone to hell and leaves a rotten taste in your mouth cause you had such an awesomely high expectations so you try it again, and again. In summarization, take your silly movie, crystal pepsi, and go to the moon. You poop mouth, poop….mou…th.

G.O.T.

YAY has already made the BLOG HALL OF FAME. So whatever he does from this point on is all gravy on the cake. Or icing on the pie. Or whatever they say.
