The 1996 Bulls won 72 games

Isn’t it a little early for this?

C’mon, we’re as intrigued (well, probably not actually) as the next person about how good the Celtics really are, but ESPN is either borderline insane or just fishing for headlines.

Twelve years ago, the Chicago Bulls set a standard of success that many think will never be matched: 72-10 in the regular season. Almost a perfect season.

Well, now we have another fast-starting team, and so far they are running with the Bulls. The Boston Celtics are on pace to surpass the Bulls’ 72 wins and become the second team to win 70 in a season.

Bookmark this page and return after each Celtics game to mark their progress.

They’ve won seven games. SEVEN.

We know a professional Boston sports franchise hasn’t lost in like 6 weeks* or something, but let’s not go placing crowns on people’s heads before the time is due. Can we at least get out of November first?

Oh, and as for us – yeah, we’ve been busy. Sorry about that. It’s probably going to be like this for the next 3 weeks or so, but you’ve got a holiday in there and stuff, so like you shouldn’t expect posts, anyway.

Actually, we may post all day on Thanksgiving just for fun.

* Our BOS friend even said the Bruins don’t count.

Thanks for seeing this and ridiculing it. I wanted to draft a stern letter to their ombudsman when I saw that. They’re “on pace” to surpass the Bulls’ record. They’re on pace to be 82-0, and the Spurs are on pace to be 81-1. Weren’t the Pistons on pace a few years ago as well, and at least that was in January and February.

You also gotta love the folks on celticsblog. Some commenters are using this as proof that espn and “the media” are anti-Celtic, because when the Celts falter, they’ll be able to say “they’re not as good as everyone thought.” Another commenter said he’d been considering doing a “player-by-player” study of that Bulls team and this Celtics team, and this will motivate him to do that. He thinks they’ll compare well. Alcoholism is truly a frightening disease

I like comparing the Lov-a-Bulls to the Celtic dancers. Mmmmmm….

Here, I’ll take care of it for him:

PG – Ron Harper vs Rajon Rondo – Harper
SG – Michael Jordan vs. Ray Allen – Jordan
SF – Scottie Pippen vs. Paul Pierce – Pippen
PF – Dennis Rodman vs. Kevin Garnett – Garnett overall because he’s pretty rad.
C – Luc Longley vs. Kendrick Perkins – Sadly, Longley
6th – Toni Kukoc vs. Tony Allen – Kukoc
and here is where we’ll get into the ’specialty players
designated shooter – Steve Kerr vs. Eddie House? – Kerr
center – Bill Wennington vs. Brian Scalabrine – Wennington
athlete – Jud Buechler – James Posey – Posey
guard – Randy Brown vs. Gabe Pruitt – Brown
forward – Jason Caffey vs. Leon Powe – Caffey, sadly
extra body – James Edwards/John Salley vs. Scott Pollard/Glen Davis – Edwards/Salley by default

Coach – Phil Jackson vs. Doc Rivers – Jackson

I can’t believe I wasted my time to do that. It’s not even close. 13 categories….11 for the Bulls.

Plus the greatest intangible of them all – MJ in the first full year back from baseball, coming off losing to the Magic in the Playoffs.

even I have to admit, it is way way way too early for this

Just had to comment on the horrible math by Shawn. The Spurs are on pace to be 64-18 if they continue on a 7-2 pace. If you loose one game then your pace would be more than one unless you lost your 82nd game. I know it’s not your point but the math just annoyed me, I had to say something.

I got an F in college trig. And calculus. But I aced Theory of Math. Although it should be “lose” one game and not loose, since we’re being technical.

“C – Luc Longley vs. Kendrick Perkins – Sadly, Longley”

Mamma Longley, is that you? Not even Luc would post this. Holy crap.
