In many countries (China, Brazil, Spain, etc.) the first name is more important than the last. There are countless Ming-s in China, so Yao has Yao on his jersey. Similarly, there are lots of Fernandez-s in Spain. There are probably lots of Marc-s and Rudy-s for first names so I don’t see the logic, but who am I to judge.

5 seconds of research on the nets unearthed 2 possible theories:

1) Some players have the same last names, ie Marc Gasol had Marc on his jersey while Pau had Gasol.

2) Certain players think they’re good enough to just go by one name, a la Pele, Nene, etc.

Neither of these seems to make sense-because 1) Why not just put M. Gasol to differentiate, and 2) Seems that Pau would be the only one who is legitimately famous enough to go by one name.

You know, where the straights come together and joke about the gays and then the “uptight” people call them homophobes when really the straights aren’t afraid of the gays, which is why they make fun of them.
