Basketball Racks Buying Guide

Why a Rack?

For some, this will be an obvious answer, but for others it might not be so apparent.  Just why do I need a rack?  Well, for starters, you don’t always need one.  If you’re just playing with a ball or two and toting them to and from, then it’s no issue.  But if you are coaching or going to be practicing your three-point contest shot, then it’s absolutely what you need to have.  A rack is going to cut down a lot of the hassle that you have associated with storage.  Instead of just throwing balls into a closet, you will have somewhere to put them.  This makes it easier for you to find them when you actually need them, and it is painless to wheel the cart on to the floor.  Without one, you are going to be picking them up over and over again and placing them in your hands.  Then you have to figure out how to carry them.  You can always go with a simple ball bag, but that’s not always foolproof, either, since the balls can still wander away pretty easily.  For shooters, you might want a wheeled rack that you can use as a station.  You will be able to take shot after shot this way, instead of having to chase one at a time.  Then, you can just go collect them and rack them back up for your next round.

Types

There are a few different types of racks that you can go with here.  It all depends on what you want, what you are willing to spend, and how many balls you want to have stored.  The first one, and most likely the most popular and well known one is that of the cart.  If you’ve been to the local recreation department, you’ve probably seen one sitting in the corner as you walk in.  It has wheels on it and most typically houses ten to 12 balls on the rack, dependent on the size, of course.  There are bigger ones out there, but this is usually enough for most people.  This type is open ended on all sides and the balls just sit on top, allowing you to easily grab them or to place them back on the rack.

The second type is that of the cage.  This is pretty self explanatory.  The cage has all four sides covered, making it harder to lose the balls if you happen to run into something (or vice versa).  This type can store more oftentimes, and it’s a lot more secure as you can use a lock or some other device if you like to make sure it isn’t tampered with.  It is, of course, a little harder to deal with when you want to get them out, though, so that is worth a think.  As the cage can be a little deep, it’s not going to be your best bet if you are working on your jumper and want to shoot one after another.  If you are practicing with others, however, this is a good idea since you’ll have people to pass to you anyway.

Another type is the vertical rack.  This type isn’t as common and isn’t going to allow you to store many balls, but it is very convenient.  It can be placed on the back of a goal, usually outside, and will usually accommodate one or two balls.  Because it’s small, it’s relatively cheap, and just a wise use of money.  This type is best for someone that is going to play with someone else and you just need the one ball.  Or if you have issues losing them.  This type is preferred for the individual player, for sure, but you can get a lot of mileage out of it if you use it properly.

What To Look For

There are, like so many things in the world, a few things to keep your eye on in regards to basketball racks.  By knowing what you will be using it for, you can get a lot better deal rather than just buying something that isn’t good for you.

Wheels or No?

In all likelihood, you will want to have a rack, or cart, that has wheels on it.  If you are looking for something that is portable in order to make pre and post-practice life easier, this is the way to go.  A rack that is not equipped with wheels is going to be stuck in one place, and even if it’s not heavy, it’s going to be a pain to move.  Imagine a cart without wheels that you try to move with balls resting in it.  It’s probably not going to go all that well if you jostle them.  There are options out there for this, but this is not a good idea unless you are only going to be playing basketball in that arena or gym.

Related to wheels, there are still a couple of decisions you have to make.  First of all, you have to make sure they are going to do their job.  If the wheels don’t move freely, or they mark up the floor, they are going to be a no-go.  Also, if they are loud and squeaky it will get annoying, depending upon how much use you have for them, so it can be overbearing.  All of these facts are well worth having a think about, and we will make sure to point out if there are any potential issues that you face when we get to our reviews in just a bit.

How Many Balls Do You Have?

If you are playing with a number of balls, then you will quite obviously need a larger rack than someone that only has one or two.  If you are the latter mentioned, then you will not need as much and you can safely go with something smaller.  A vertical rack would maybe be your best bet, if you want a rack at all.  Outside of that, though, you still have to consider how many balls you have.  If you have a large squad, you’ll need more balls than a team that has fewer players.  And with that, you need a rack that is going to support them all.  So, just keep this in mind, lest you end up with a rack that doesn’t exactly fulfill your needs.

Durability

Just like with anything on the market, both basketball and in life in general, durability is a major component.  If the rack you buy is made out of cheap materials, then it’s just not going to last as long as others.  Maybe the place where the balls sit will start to come apart, or maybe the ‘shelf’ will start tear up.  Neither of these are especially good to be fair.  You get what you pay for here, so if you are looking to save money, you won’t get as much quality as you’d maybe be hoping for.  If you aren’t as interested in something that lasts as long, then there options for you as well.  It’s a balancing act, so just remember that and know that you can’t have it all.

Variety or No?

If you’ll be using your rack for more than just basketball, then that is also going to be a factor here.  It goes without saying that a rack that houses only volleyballs will allow for more of them to fit.  And it also works in the opposite direction, too.  If you are looking for something that is going to allow you to store all types of balls, then perhaps a cage, as mentioned above, is the best direction for you to go in.  This will allow you to throw them all in together, rather than taking up room on the rack for the basketball players.

Maintenance

This is a category that a lot of people wouldn’t think about, but you still have to make sure that you take care of your stuff if you want it to last as long as possible and do its job the best way possible.  One way that you can make sure to maintain your stuff is simply go over and check it on a regular basis.  The biggest thing is making sure that the wheels aren’t wobbly.  They also might need a little bit of oil applied to them.  Some racks are going to perform better than others and won’t require as much maintenance to be done, while others will need more.  Most of the time, a cheaper rack will need more fixing up, while a more expensive one should be good to go right away.  Either way, don’t just expect them to always be good and ready for use.  You also might want to check the shelving, too, as you never know when someone could have hung on it and caused it to have some problems.  If one of the products has issues relating to maintenance, we’ll make sure to let you know in our reviews.

Weight

The size of a rack is important, but so, too, is the weight of it.  If you are unable to wheel your rack around, you’re probably not going to be putting it to use very much.  That’s just a fact of life.  This is especially true for those that do not have wheels, since smaller individuals are going to have a heck of time toting it from Point A to Point B.  So just keep in mind that weight is a factor, even for something that is thought of as highly mobile.  Even that will take some pushing and pulling, so you may not want the heaviest thing out there.

Assembly

This part is going to be a very big deal for a select group of folks (you know who you are).  Others might not have as much of an issue with this, but there is an assembly aspect to buying a basketball rack.  Putting it together is going to be crucial.  If it’s sitting in a box, then your balls are going to be on the floor, after all.  What you want is something that requires little to no assembly, preferably.  But if it does take some, then you will want to see that it is relatively easy to do.  This means that it has clear instructions and does not take a lot of time.  If it takes someone a couple of hours to do, then they won’t be very happy.  We’ll make it a point to mention whether an item has a good assembly process or if it’s just a little bit too much to handle.

Best Basketball Rack Reviews

  1. Baden Steel Basketball 12-Ball Rack

Kicking off our list is the type of rack you’d expect to see. This offering from Baden is a cart that uses steel and can fit up to 12 balls on it. The wheels are great because they don’t mark up the floor and are super easy to transport around with.  The frame is made out of steel, as stated before, and is thus very durable as a result.  It’s also fairly tall on the top level, so it would be good for bigger players that want to launch some shots in preparation of the NBA three-point contest.  Because it fits 12 balls, you are able to get a wide variety of uses from it.  So, whether it’s a team, a league, or just for storage at a school, you can get a lot of use from it.  Some people have found the wheels to be a little bit wobbly, so keep that in mind.  It’s also not the best candidate to be placed outside, so if that is what you have in mind, it would be wise to look elsewhere.

Pros:

  • Very durable
  • Easy to get around
  • Holds a good size, making it good for all kinds of uses

Cons:

  • Not for outside use
  • Wheels are a little wobbly
  1. Trigon Sports Procage Secure Ball Locker

If you are looking for something a little bit heavy duty that will hold a lot more in it, then this offer from Trigon could be the way to go. You will have to pay a bit extra to get that, but the capacity is huge, so it makes up for it quite a bit. It’s easy to keep your balls locked up, too, making it ideal if there are a lot of people coming in and out of the gym.  It holds up to 30 balls, a huge capacity, and would beat the heck out of just rolling them into the storage closet or having to tote a bag picking them up.  The bars are made out of steel tubing, ensuring that it is durable.  It’s also a good idea for those that have multiple sports going on, since the area of it is just so large.  Other than price, the main issue to be had with this cage is that it’s not as heavy duty as you might think.  It’s still not conducive to a lot of weight or pressure, so just keep that in mind.

Pros:

  • Massive capacity
  • Very durable
  • Secures balls easily

Cons:

  • Hefty price to pay
  • Not as heavy duty as you’d think
  1. Blue Collar Basketball Butler 4 Ball Rack

This is a more nontraditional type of rack, as it’s a vertical one that is used to store just a few balls. Unlike most in this genre, though, it does house up to four, making it good for small teams and groups of friends to use on a consistent basis. It’s very light, so it’s not going to be a problem to put up and also comes with hardware in order to get the job done and have it installed for play.  There is a slight annoyance due to the design, which forces you to either take the ball from the top or the bottom.  The two in the middle can’t be removed unless you move one of the other two, so that’s one thing that might be a little bit of a bummer.  Another thing is the price is a little high considering what it is, higher than a cart, and that is just not going to be acceptable to a lot of people.

Pros:

  • Fits just about anywhere
  • Great for small groups
  • Easy and light to install

Cons:

  • A little pricey
  • Have to remove from top or bottom
  1. Lynk Adjustable Sports Rack

This is another example of a rack that isn’t the traditional type. This rack, in fact, is totally different since it’s not trying to be basketball only. Instead, this rack seeks to serve the fan and player of a bevy of sports by giving you three rows and then some hooks to hang things on as well.  This is ideal for the inside of a garage where you can just have your kids put their sports equipment in and then grab and go.  The hooks are adjustable to fit your needs, and you can put all kinds of stuff on it.  The price is also another big plus here, as it’s quite cheap to buy and own one. I comes with the hardware that it takes to put up and is relatively simple.  Some people have complained that it’s not the sturdiest thing out there, but given the price that just has to be accepted and expected.  Regardless, it’s a good idea for someone that can’t get enough of a lot of different sports.

Pros:

  • Fits all kinds of sports equipment
  • Adjustable to your needs
  • Very good price

Cons:

  • Not the greatest of materials
  • Not a large capacity
  1. Champion Sports 16-Ball Steel Storage Rack

If you are looking for a little bit more storage room, then look no further than Champion, who will allow you to fit up to 16 balls on the rack. This offering is also cheaper than many we have seen so far, too, making it ideal if you have a decent size team and want to save a little bit of money in the process of buying one. The base is large and is made in such as way that it will not topple over, saving you a lot of time and trouble.  The frame is made out of steel, too, which makes it move heavy duty than most you’d find out there.  Some people have found that they have issues with the screws or the frame, but on the whole people have found it worth the money despite the materials being cheaper than some of the more expensive stuff available.  It’s got that bigger capacity, and that provides so many options for people to take full advantage of.

Pros:

  • Good price
  • Big capacity
  • Won’t fall over easily

Cons:

  • A little flimsy for some

FAQ’s About Basketball Racks

* Will A Rack Make My Ball’s Life Longer?

The rack itself isn’t going to do that, but you can still do a lot of things to help aid in this endeavor.  One thing you have to make sure to do is to store your balls at room temperature.  If you are going to be putting them in a sun room or basement type of setup, then you will see fluctuations in temperature, which will make the balls deflate.  This can also cause them to warp, meaning that they won’t bounce properly anymore.  This is definitely not what you want, so picking out a place with a nice, normal temperature is a good start.  If you won’t use the ball for an extended period of time, you can also try taking all of the air out of it.  This will ensure that it won’t lose air on its own, which is naturally going to occur, no matter the circumstances if you leave it sitting for long enough.

* Does Price Matter With Basketball Racks?

Unfortunately, price is always going to matter to people, and that’s definitely the case here with basketball racks.  You don’t want to overstate it, but it’s important that you don’t skimp and save too much.  A cheap rack means you are going to get cheap materials.  Dirt cheap stuff sounds really cool, but if it breaks the first couple of times you use it, you end up having to buy another one or doing repairs that should be unnecessary.  Some racks are known for being poor if you lean on them, and your best bet to avoiding this potential hazard is to get something that costs a bit more than you might have planned on.  The good news is that basketball racks aren’t all that expensive, provided you don’t buy extremely large ones, that is.

* Can I Just Build My Own Rack?

You sure could so so, but it would take some time, effort, planning, and talent from you to do so.  You also would need the proper materials and would, of course, have to be capable of building one yourself.  With that said, many people have stated that it’s just simpler and quicker for them to order one online and allow it to be sent to them.  It means you don’t have to deal with the hassle and it also is much cheaper for a lot of people to do it this way.  You can get a great deal by doing things yourself, but DIY projects aren’t for everyone and have to be thought out more than you’d think on the surface.
